Cape Lookout Trail
We hiked 4.8 miles round trip to Lookout Point on a very muddy and rooty trail. The roots were covered in mud and slippery. Luckily we didn't fall!

Mama Burger and Baby Burger
In the early 1960s, A&W Root Beer introduced "The Burger Family" to its menu, giving its customers different burger
sizes they could purchase, including a Papa burger Mama burger, and Baby burger. A Teen Burger was added in 1963. In 1965, A&W President Fran R. Oesterie asked International Fiberglass to bring his menu to life by making three-dimensional burger family giants. Being the second oldest restaurant chain in America, this was a great score for International Fiberglass.
A&W root beer stands were encouraged (but not obligated) to purchase a family member, each of which held a burger and a frosty mug of root beer. Many opted for the enter Burger Family which ranged from 4 to 9 feet tall. They were often posted on poles or A&W building rooftops. Newspaper ads featured Burger Family members and the chain used them on its cups and wrapping papers.
International Fiberglass Company mass reproduced theseat its Venice, CA shop from the mid 1960s until around 1974 when A&W replaced the Burger Family with a new mascot - Rooty the Great American Root Bear.
The American Giants Museum tells the story of the kitschy and quirky “Muffler Man/Bunyan Giant” statues that sprang up in the 1960s as advertising gimmicks across the USA. Today, they are some of the most popular attractions for tourists traveling Historic Route 66.

History Kinston:
The town was founded on 6 March 1788 by Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 settlers (including nine male and six female convicts) who landed that day from HMS Supply. They had sailed from Port Jackson just a few weeks after the establishment of the British colony of New South Wales. The settlement was initially known as Sidney or Sydney Bay, and by 1796 was being called the Town of Sydney, in honour of Viscount Sydney, British Home Secretary and patron of the First Fleet. King established a house on the hill over the town, but the mass of roots in the ground caused him to call it "rooty hill", which name was also later transferred to Rooty Hill, New South Wales when King later established a house there.

D) It was at the Cape of Good Hope that Bligh and Christian quarrelled for the first time and this was to continue at sea. The two men had very different temperaments – Fletcher Christian was the sensitive and gentlemanly man of honour – William Bligh, although a courageous commander was a man who inflamed others easily with his abusive manner and pettiness. This was to cause continual discontent among the crew throughout the voyage, It would be a long 4 months to Otaheite.

c) Surviving Cape Horn.
Bounty’s route to the South Seas was to be via the southern tip of South America around the treacherous Cape Horn. Bligh knew that the delays in England and the advancing season could make rounding Cape Horn more hazardous. He applied to the Admiralty and was granted permission to sail the safer but longer route around the Cape of Good Hope. Ultimately he chose to risk Cape Horn.
Bounty has dad weather from the outset and only 6 days out to sea, a gale did much damage to the ship. This forced them to put in to Teneriffe to take on extra stores. Bligh decided that they woul sail on to Otaheite (Tahiti) without stopping again and reduced the crew’s ration by one third.
It was 4 months before Bounty reached Cape Horn and met with its huge seas and gales. She was a small ship and with no portholes below deck, had little light or ven
tilation and with a third of the ship’s area devoted to storage storage for plants there was also very little space. After battling raging storms for a full mouth, with men now ailing and injured, Bligh finally admitted defeat and turned for the Cape of Good Hope. It took 5 weeks in port at False Bay to repair the damage done at The Horn and restock their supplies.
