Erbach, ehem.
Erbach's Schlossberg with its church and castle can be seen from afar. 50 m above the Danube valley, it dominates the town and landscape from all sides. The church and castle are a gem on the main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. Parts of the castle, which is privately owned by the Imperial Barons of Ulm and Erbach, are open to the public as a museum (by appointment).
A charming contrast to this building is the baroque church of St. Martin, which is located right next door. It was built on the same site by Franz Kleinshans in 1767-69 after the demolition of its late Gothic predecessor and is one of the most beautiful small rococo-style churches in Upper Swabia.
The stucco work and the high altar were created by Ignaz Finsterwalder and his son Joseph Anton. The frescoes were painted by Franz Martin Kuen in 1768 and the sloping side altars are the work of Fidelis Kopf 1773-75.
If you look closely, you can recognize the Mother of God on the crescent moon in the high altar. It is from Ulm, around 1490.
