My rare Himalayan Begonia is now flowering in Sydney!! It likes the cooler weather of Autumn and has suddenly decided to flower profusely. It has giant-sized leaves!! This Himalayan Begonia comes from Nepal. It was brought to Australia in the late 1930s by renowned botanist, and prolific gardener, Lilian Fraser. She travelled the world looking for rare and exotic plants. Lilian Fraser lived in the nearby Sydney suburb of Pennant Hills, where today you can still visit her amazing garden which is now maintained by the local (Hornsby) council. It is located along Bellamy Street at Pennant Hills, and I drive past it on most days, lol. The Cottage Chapel at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, Palmerston Road, Hornsby, NSW
Dwarfed by the modern buildings and facilities of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, at Hornsby, a northern Sydney suburb, is a quaint sandstone cottage called "Jave-la-Grande". It was built in 1895 as the family home of the artist and historian, George Collingridge. Collingridge, whose full name was George Alphonse Collingridge de Tourcey, was born in Oxfordshire, England, in 1847. His parents moved the family to France in 1853 and George spent fourteen years at school in Paris, later studying architecture and wood engraving. He was also a pupil of the French landscape painter, Jean Baptist Camille Corot (1796-1875), and living in the Latin Quarter, knew the likes of Victor Hugo. George finally decided upon a career in graphic illustration at a time when all printed illustrations were reproduced from engravings, either carved into wood or etched onto copper plates. He later moved to London and undertook engravings for such famous journals as the "Illustrated London News" and "L'Illustration" in the 1870s. On the advice of his brother, Arthur, who was already established as an artist in Australia, George migrated here on board the steamship, “Lusitania”, in 1879 to join the staff of the "Illustrated Sydney News". He also produced drawings for the “Australian Town and Country Journal", "Sydney Mail" and “Picturesque Atlas of Australasia”. With his brother, he founded the (Royal) Art Society of New South Wales in July 1880, and launched the first Australian art journal, "Australian Art", eight years later. In 1883 George married Lucy Monica Makinson at Hunters Hill, and they took up a small property on Berowra Creek. On 27 October, 1888, George paid a deposit on the purchase of 3 acres of Crown land in the bush to the east of the railway station at Hornsby. He built a stone cottage in the early 1890s which was later demolished and shortly afterwards had a second house, the present building, erected from sandstone quarried on the site. Each block was carefully selected for its beauty and colour and the walls are two-feet thick. The roof was clad in Marseilles tiles and the cottage featured a studio with skylights. On the skylights and internal windows George painted landscapes. George gave both cottages the name, "Jave-la-Grande", having regard to his consuming interest and study of Australian maritime discovery. Between 1890 and 1925, George wrote two books and about thirty articles in support of his theory that the Portuguese had chartered all but the south coast of Australia before 1530, 160 years before Captain Cook. He based his theory largely on maps produced in Dieppe, France, between 1536 and 1566 showing a large land mass called Jave-la-Grande (the great Java) in the correct latitudes for Australia, but incorrect longitudes. Although untrained as a historian, his book "The Discovery of Australia", was published in Sydney in 1895, and was a remarkable work for its time and place. George was active in local affairs and published Hornsby’s first newspaper, “The Progress”, between 1894 and 1897 and was the foundation secretary of the Wahroonga Progress Association in 1895. From 1914 he also contributed to the newspapers, the Hornsby “Star” and Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Shires’ “Advocate”, which began in 1919. Despite George's research interests he still needed to support his family and was the first art teacher at Hornsby Technical College between 1905 and 1913, then Sydney Technical College at Ultimo between 1915 and 1925. For over twenty-five years he also taught art at Barker College, Hornsby, knew six languages plus Esperanto, and founded, in 1908, the first Esperanto Club in Australia. When George and Lucy’s children were young dense bush surrounded the cottage, but the sound from George’s silver bugle brought them home from over a kilometre away. In 1915 Jave-la-Grande was leased and George moved to a house near his son. “Jave-le-Grande” was sold in 1926 to Murdo Murray, a retired seaman and in 1931 George Collingridge died at the age of eighty-three. Unfortunately, few of George’s woodcuts, for which he was so well known, have survived. For many years they were stored in an office in Hornsby, apparently only to be burnt as firewood one bitterly cold winter in the 1930s. In 1933 the original buildings of Hornsby District Hospital, located close to “Jave-la-Grande”, were opened by the NSW Governor, Sir Philip Game. It was the only public hospital between the North Shore and Newcastle. At the ceremony, the famous Hornsby resident, geologist and Antarctic explorer, Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David, said that if Hornsby had been in Ancient Greece, it would have been in possession of a temple dedicated to the goddess of health. Also, in 1933 “Jave-la-Grande’s” owner, Murdo Murray, died and his widow, Elizabeth, ultimately bequeathed the building to the hospital in 1954. Over the years it served as the Medical Superintendent’s quarters, Sister’s Home, and a Children’s Day Care Centre. In 1971 it was suggested that the cottage be repaired and refurbished as the Hospital chapel and in March 1977 it opened as the Cottage Chapel. Over the years the little chapel even served as a venue for weddings but is usually a place for quiet meditation and prayer. Sadly, about 10 of George Collingridge’s original paintings which had survived on the interior walls of the cottage were stolen before 1981. The chapel has a dedicated chaplin whose office is in the cottage. Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, 25 Edgeworth David Avenue, Hornsby, NSW
Set back from the road on busy Edgeworth David Avenue in the northern Sydney suburb of Hornsby, stands an arts and cultural centre originally built in 1903 as the home of Elisabeth Kirby. She named it "Wallarobba", a word used by Aboriginal people to describe a rainy gully. It is a spacious two-storey brick and sandstone building, on 2-metre deep sandstone foundations, featuring arched entrance ways and bow windows. The three-acre block featured an extensive garden, the showpiece of the district, and an orchard. In 1910 the property was sold to James Stephen Inch (1868-1952), agency manager of the Mutual Life Assurance Company. Inch opened the grounds for garden parties and charity fetes, adding rustic furniture, and walkways to a creek spanned by small bridge. Fifteen years later, in 1925, the house was bought by the solicitor, Alfred Livingstone Parker (1875-1935), later Sir Alfred, and renamed "Willow Park". The Parker family continued to allow the gardens of "Willow Park" to be open to the public for functions such as the fundraising bazaar in aid of Hornsby Hospital in 1926 which included flowers and plants, orange trees, novelties, ice creams and children's stalls. A garden party in aid of the Sunbeam Free Kindergarten at Alexandria in 1931 included croquet and putting competitions. "Willow Park" was also the venue for the wedding reception of Alfred Parker's only daughter, Joan, in 1931. This involved a grand marquee being erected in the grounds for 75 seated guests. Alfred Parker served as an Alderman on Hornsby Shire Council from 1923 to 1930 and was Lord Mayor of Sydney between 1934 and 1935. His home was decorated with antiques and paintings and he possessed a large personal collection of literary works. A knighthood in 1935 saw Parker receive so many congratulatory telephone calls to "Willow Park", that to save congestion at the Wahroonga exchange, its number had to be temporarily cut off. While still in office as Lord Mayor, Sir Alfred died at his home on 18 August 1935 leaving a widow, Lady Anne, four sons and a daughter. "Willow Park" was subsequently leased for a number of years before being purchased and restored by Hornsby Shire Council in 1962 as the Willow Park Community Centre. First to use the building were the Civilian Widows and the St John Ambulance Nursing Service. It became the permanent home of the Hornsby Senior Citizens' Club and provided meeting rooms for a number of local organisations. Offices for Lifeline and Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Community Aged and Disabled Transport Service were also provided. Council restored the house again and reopened it as the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, in 2011, reverting to its original name. It houses a community art studio, purpose-built printmaking room, accommodation for art classes, an artists’ lounge and gallery space. The Hornsby Art Society also has an office in the centre.
