Seltener Besuch in Gronau!

Cheshire cat up on Chester city walls.
The Cheshire Cat is a fictional character from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, known for its mischievous grin and ability to disappear. The phrase "grin like a Cheshire cat" predates Carroll's story and has a mysterious origin with several theories.
One theory suggests the phrase originated in Cheshire, a county in England known for its dairy farms, implying that cats were happy due to the abundance of milk and cream. Another theory posits that Cheshire cheese was moulded into cat shapes, with the head being the last part eaten, leaving a grinning visage.
Additionally, some believe the phrase may have been inspired by a sign painter in Cheshire who attempted to depict lions, which ended up resembling grinning cats. There are also suggestions that the Cheshire Cat was inspired by carvings in local churches, such as those in Grappenhall and Pott Shrigley.
Despite these theories, the exact origin of the phrase remains uncertain, and it is likely a combination of local lore and Carroll's imagination.
