Portsmouth Power
The only recreational railroad operating in my home state at the present is the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad and their series of lunch, dinner and murder mystery trains. Marketed as the Grand Bellevue Rail Dining Experience they run from their home base here in the small yard adjacent the Melville Marina six miles up the west side of Aquidneck Island as far as the causeway that once lead to the Sakonnet River swing bridge which which has been gone for decades isolating the 13 miles of rail on the island which reaches into downtown Newport.
At right, the third train of the season is being readied for its departure north at 6:30 PM behind the newest locomotive in Rhode Island, an unnumbered yellow GE 80 tonner which was built in July 1941 as the 5th of the model off the production line. Originally numbered GE 14, it worked at the company's Schenectady plant then later served at Northeast Utilities' West Springfield power plant. After coal and oil fired units 1 and 2 were shut down in 1999 the locomotive had no purpose and sat there out of service for more than two decades until purchased by the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad in 2023. It was shipped to Fall River on a flat car and then trucked over here and set back on the rails and returned to service.
The unit it replaced is at left and while still operable it is now relegated to back up and protect duties. Number 43 is a GE 44 tonner built in 1951 for South Carolina shortline Hampton and Branchville Railroad and later is served on Connecticut's Branford Steam Railroad hauling trains of trap rock.
As for the train, it is four cars long consisting of a power car and two diners (one ex ACL and one ex PRR) bracketing the kitchen car.

NS Elkhorn, WV
Norfolk and Western began a modernization project of the Elkhorn Grade in 1947 to reduce grade and eliminate the original unventilated single-track summit tunnel. Slide fences made with worn rail as their structure placed in cuts to project against falling rock remain today. The improvements made by 1950 allowed modern N&W steam locomotives to replace the AC electrification in place since World War I. NS manifest train 18W from Bellevue, OH to Winston-Salem, NC climbs the ruling eastbound grade in the last light of day.
