Santa's on his way
Having finished at Wentworth Woodhouse we went next door to the garden centre for lunch, and saw this selfie opportunity!!

Bees on a puzzle, I could not ignore such a pleasure, the dream combination of my two favorite hobbies. I much prefer old hand-cut puzzles, but I liked this puzzle, indeed difficult for its size, the bee-shaped pieces being strictly identical in shape (in fact there are 5 different ones). There is no queen, which is normal for a frame at an advanced stage, we see closed brood in the center, open brood around and a few cells full of honey in the upper corners. All the bees are workers, there is no male either.
Wentworth explains that this version is in thicker medium (4 mm) indeed the pieces are nice.

Bit of a theme to some of my last photos for 124 in 2024 - this one was only 40 piece, so definitely easy peasy...... but I do love wentworth puzles, with their unusual shapes. Can you spot the shell, dolphin, anchor and 2 ship ooutlines in this one?

Nightime in the Marble Hall
The Marble hall, one of the state rooms within Wentworth Woodhouse had Santa's sleigh ready for photo opportunities as part of their "Twas the Night before Christmas" themed Christmas decorations.
The Marble Saloon was once dubbed the finest Georgian room in England. It's 60 ft square and 40ft high with a pillared gallery and ceiling plasterwork by Jonathan and Joseph Rose. Its name comes from the material that lines its floor but surprisingly the pillars may look marble, but they are made of scagliola, a polished mixture of plaster, glue and dye. Sadly at present there's a lot of work to do to restore it.
Wentworth Woodhouse was built for Thomas Wentworth who became Marquess of Rockingham. It's unusual for being two back-to-back houses. The West Front was built from 1724-28 of brick in the English Baroque style, whilst the East Front from 1731-50 was built of sandstone in a Palladian style
In 1782, on the death of Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, the estate passed to the Earls Fitzwilliam, who remained in ownership until the late C20th. Following the death of the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam in 1948 the house was vacated. In 1950, it was let to West Riding County Council, in 1986, it became a teacher training college then part of Sheffield City Polytechnic. In 1988 it was sold to a private purchaser in 1988 and again in 1999 to the Newbold family. In 2017 the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust bought it for around £7 million and they are now starting the long process of restoration. They are supported by the National Trust and members get a discount on entry.

You enter via the undercroft - very reminiscent of Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire.
The house sits within it's own parkland and originally had a large estate and lands, including a model village for estate workers. It was built for Thomas Wentworth who became Marquess of Rockingham. The family became one of the most important in Yorkshire.
