Born a slave in North Carolina in either 1847 or 1849, Potts took his name from his master. In 1866, he married a woman named Annie, worked as a team master & carpenter, & continued to live in North Caroline. Annie, while pregnant, died from rupture due to lifting a heavy tub of water. Potts enlisted in Company G, 24th Infantry in January 1871. After discharged in January 1876, re-enlisted in Troop I, 10th Cavalry, with which he served the rest of his military career. He made a forced march from Fort Verde to Fort Apache over Crooked Road through 1 1/2 feet of snow & suffered considerably from lung trouble from that time on. In 1892, he married 22-year-old Emma Jordan. Despite 26 years of continuous military service, the only combat action he ever saw was the charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Potts retired with full pay in February 1900 & went to work in a St. Louis dentist's office. Shortly after Christmas 1902, while playing with his stepson, he suffered a massive hemorrhage of the lungs & died twenty-minutes later. His wife, Emma, continued to work as a laundress until 1922, when she applied for a widow's pension. She lived on this $20. per month pension until her death in 1937.

Built in 2010 for AirAsia X as 9M-XXH, the aircraft moved to VietJetAir in December 2022.

Delivered in December 2023, the aircraft is the sixth in Qantas' Flying Art Series and is named Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa and was created by Maringka Baker, taking 14 days to reproduce the more than 20,000 dots in the design.
