The 1912-built Sydney Harbour ferry Kanangra pulls in to Cremorne Point Wharf. In this image from late in the year 1980 she's doing a Mosman Bay run with just a moderate load of passengers aboard at the time.
The veteran ferry Kanangra was built locally here in Sydney by Mort's Dock @ Woolwich (near Hunter's Hill) before the First World War - and was one of literally dozens of her type constructed during this era to cater for Sydney's rapidly expanding public transport needs at the time.
Unlike most of the many 'K Class' ferries of her type (names all began with the letter K), Kanangra's hull was of steel and not of wooden construction. She had a capacity just a little under 1,000 passengers.
Originally a tall-funnelled coal-burning steam ferry, her boilers and reciprocating steam engine were removed in the late 1950s and replaced with an 8-cylinder Crossley diesel engine - and thus she would continue to work on Sydney Harbour until the mid-1980s.
In the end, Kanangra's working life spanned well in excess of 70 years!
Fortuitously and wonderfully - Kanangra also survives to this day at the grand old age of 109 years and is currently owned and under restoration by the Sydney Heritage Fleet - located in Sydney Harbour's Rozelle Bay.
It is intended that she ultimately be restored to full operating condition - still powered by her now-rare Crossley diesel - and that we will again one day see this rare and stylish and truly magnificent vessel gracing Sydney Harbour.

The magnificent, handsome and seriously stylish 1912-built Sydney Harbour ferry Kanangra. In this image she's doing a Mosman Bay run - and here is pulling into Cremorne Point Wharf with a moderate load of passengers onboard. A 1980-style Sydney skyline sets the background along with an empty bulk carrier apparently at anchor - a reminder that once upon a time Sydney Harbour was a working port.
This veteran vessel was built locally here in Sydney by Mort's Dock @ Woolwich (near Hunter's Hill) before the First World War, and was one of dozens of her type constructed in this era to cater for Sydney's rapidly expanding public transport needs at that time.
