Erratica
It's time to take a pause in the Minnesota narrative, because we're leaving for another trip today, and I don't know how much internet access I'll have along the way. So here's a picture I took a week or so ago at the Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve of DuPage County. This is Salt Creek, swollen after the first night of rain we've had in something like a month.
I took the picture in part to show those rocks in the creek, which are larger than they look. That nearest rock is a granite boulder about two feet across, and someday, I know, some graduate-level teaching assistant from a local college will stand here and tell a bunch of undergraduates in a Geology 101 class that that's an erratic, a big rock from someplace like Michigan or Canada dumped here 12,000 years ago by the glacier. But the thing is, I know for a fact the Forest Preserves of DuPage County put that rock in Salt Creek just this summer, when they were doing that big rehab project associated with the removal of the dam. That's part of what makes geology hard to study in the modern world. People have been moving stuff all around for centuries, and you can't trust that anything made it where it is through natural processes instead of on the back of a truck.
