Sand Bubblers
Sand bubbler crabs (or sand-bubblers) are small crabs that live on sandy beaches in the tropical Indo-Pacific.
They feed by filtering sand through their mouthparts, leaving behind balls of sand that are broken up by the incoming high tide.
Double-striped Thick-knee (Hesperoburhinus bistriatus) @ Garabito, Costa Rica-4474
From Wikipedia & bird.org:
Large and bizarre shorebird of lowland dry grassland and savannas, usually found in pairs or small groups. Active mainly at night (note the big, yellow, owl-like eyes). During the daytime, usually seen standing or sitting quietly, often in the shade of small trees or bushes. Note cryptic, overall pale sandy plumage, double stripes on the head, and long yellow legs.
It is a resident breeder in Central and South America from southern Mexico south to Colombia, Venezuela and northern Brazil. It also occurs on Hispaniola and some of the Venezuelan Caribbean islands, and is a very rare vagrant to Trinidad, Curaçao and the USA. It prefers arid grassland, savanna, and other dry, open habitats.
This is a largely nocturnal and crepuscular species. It flies only reluctantly, relying on crouching and camouflage for concealment. The double-striped thick-knee eats large insects and other small vertebrate and invertebrate prey. It is sometimes semi-domesticated because of its useful function in controlling insects, and has benefited from the clearing of woodlands to create pasture. The song, given at night, is a loud kee-kee-kee.
The nest is a bare scrape into which two olive-brown eggs are laid and incubated by both adults for 25–27 days to hatching. The downy young are precocial and soon leave the nest.
"In Ghent"
Rather like "In Bruges" but a lot less violent 😄
I think if you want an epic shot of Ghent then you need to stay there in winter time and wander out at 4:00am, this place is 'popular'.
It was heaving, even on a cold April day.
I took this shot somewhere where no-one would walk in front of me, although I did have to clone out the canoeist that suddenly appeared.
Quite a beautiful city in a medieval way, some really impressive buildings, but if some of them look like they are leaning it's not my lens, they lean.
The low countries, Belgium and Holland have very sandy soil and we got used to seeing buildings that weren't altogether upstanding.
We only stayed half a day which was just enough for the highlights. Ghent has an LEZ so if you want to take your car in then you need to register on line quite some time before hand. Luckily my old oil burner just qualified.
Interestingly, with no hills and cruising at 65mph for hundreds of miles I averaged a real 60mpg!
This beats those days of commuting by miles 😄

In the tranquil embrace of Corbett National Park's Ramganga river, a herd of wild elephants was near the river with some of its members immersed in river water. Their majestic presence a testament to the untamed beauty of the wilderness. As sunlight danced upon the reflecting, rippling waters, the air resonated with the melodic symphony of their mild trumpets.
With eager anticipation, I framed the scene through my camera lens, ready to immortalize this fleeting encounter with nature's magnificence. The elephants, led by the wise matriarch, waded the cool embrace of the river, their massive forms exuding a sense of serene contentment.
Amidst the gentle currents, I focussed on two sub-adult elephants, their playful spirits ignited by the shimmering waters. With graceful movements, they engaged in a lively game of trunk-wrestling, their youthful energy a captivating spectacle against the backdrop of the tranquil river.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still as I captured the essence of their joyous play. It was a scene of pure harmony, where the rhythms of nature converged in a symphony of life and vitality. Me and my friends did not mind the scorching sun burning over our heads on the sandy and stony expanse of the river.
As the sun cast its sharp light upon the water, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for bearing witness to such untamed beauty. In the heart of the wilderness, amidst the serene expanse of the Ramganga river, I found myself humbled by the sheer majesty of the natural world.

Wren (Troglodytes Troglodytes)
This Wren landed on a broken off tree trunk very close to me and started singing so loudly... Amazing voice for such a small bird.
