"Curzon Hall", formerly the home of Harry Smith, 53 Agincourt Road, Marsfield, NSW
On the corner of Balaclava and Agincourt Roads in the Sydney suburb of Marsfield, stands an impressive two-storey sandstone mansion still set in beautiful grounds. "Curzon Hall" was completed in 1901 as the home of Harry Smith, a successful businessman who made his fortune from renting railway refreshment rooms and Caves House at the Jenolan Caves. In 1922 "Curzon Hall" was purchased by the Roman Catholic Order, the Vincentian Fathers, and used for almost sixty years as a seminary known as St Joseph's. In 1983 the Hall was opened as a function centre. Harry Smith was born in Toronto, Canada, one of six children reared by Hugh and Rebecca Smith, nee Pitt. Hugh Smith manufactured soda water fountains and the family migrated to Sydney in 1879, and were said to have introduced the first soda fountains to Sydney. On arrival they set up business at 43 Sussex Street, Sydney, as Smith & Harrison. On the 6th June, 1884, Harry Smith married Isabella Curzon-Webb, allegedly related to the first English Marquess of Curzon, Kedleston, Derbyshire. Lord Curzon (1859-1925) was an aristocrat who served as Great Britain's Viceroy of India from 1898 until 1905. At the time of his marriage, Harry was working with his father who had patented a kerosene safety lamp in 1889, used on Sydney steam trams, invented and manufactured a gas lighting plant for country homes, and a portable spraying unit for orchards. During his travels, Harry saw the potential for upgrading railway refreshment rooms, generally located on station platforms to serve hungry travellers. In 1890 the railway commissioners were inviting tenders for the rooms. They stipulated that hot tea, coffee and sandwiches were to be provided at the refreshment rooms at all times of the day and night with chops, steak, soup and cold meats available at lunch and dinner times. At stations where table meals could not be provided, luncheon baskets which contained a cold lunch and desert, also had to be provided. These were to be purchased at the station, eaten on the train and the deposit for the return of the basket and cutlery refundable at the next station with a refreshment room. In 1898 Harry secured the lease of at least sixteen refreshment rooms including the one at Sydney Terminal Station as well as those at Armidale, Nyngan and Narrabri. He then went on be awarded a 10-year lease on Caves House at Jenolan, built and owned by the NSW Government. The two-storey building to accommodate visitors to the caves was completed in 1887 and the present Caves House in 1891. Initially living at Enmore, in the 1890s Harry began construction of his and Isabella's palatial home at Marsfield, "Curzon Hall" which was named in honour of his father-in-law. In fact, Harry appropriated his wife's aristocratic name even calling himself Harry Curzon-Smith. Sandstone for the construction of "Curzon Hall" was quarried on the original 35-acre property from a site in Talavera Road where Macquarie University now stands. The sandstone was quarried under the supervision of a quarry master by the name of George Mulnestern, a Finnish seaman, who deserted his ship to live in Australia. Most of the masonry work on the house has been attributed to Thomas Laidlaw & Sons whose work has been associated with St Joseph's in Hunters Hill and parts of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, including the steps down to the crypt. The house, of striking proportions, features broad stone colonnades and many-arched balconies extending around two sides of the house. An arched stone port-cochere at the entrance enabled carriages and coaches to pass through so that passengers could have direct access to the front door without being subjected to the weather. The mansion is topped by an Italianate stone tower rising above the slate roof and tall sandstone chimneys. Inside, were twenty-four spacious rooms and an extensive cellar under the house. A separate stone rectangular building was erected as the ballroom, with a dance floor built like an amphitheatre, and three tiers of seats for spectators. The ballroom was topped by a roof garden and promenade. Around the two main buildings were formal gardens surrounded by tall decorative stone walls, as well as a long stone stable and coach-house building. Harry enjoyed entertaining at weekends and would show his friends around the house delighting in telling them in great detail about each room's construction. The house was actually too large for the family (Harry, his wife Isabella, and two children, Bertram and Isabel) and part of it was closed up and unused. During its construction there were recommendations that it would make an ideal government house! Harry was actively involved in supervising construction of his mansion which was apparently erected over a number of years. "Curzon Hall" was completed in early 1901 and understandably became a venue for numerous balls, parties and banquets. Isabel Curzon-Smith's 18th birthday was celebrated with over 100 guests with dancing until the early hours of the morning. The supper hall upstairs was was decorated with "numerous and unique fairy lights combined with the larger and more powerful illuminations to make a scene of dazzling brightness and splendour". Some of the entertainment included pieces played on the guitar and mandolin and demonstrations of dances called the "frou frou" and "pom pom". Another notable family event held in 1911 was Bertram Curzon-Smith's 23rd birthday together with the announcement of his engagement to Lucy Beverley of Eastwood. Harry and Isabella hosted an "at home" for their son and future daughter-in-law for 130 guests. The function began at 3.30 in the afternoon and went until to 11 pm at night. The guests were picked up in horse-drawn vehicles from Eastwood station and on arrival were given afternoon tea in the dining room "decorated with profusions of wisteria". Later, "singing, music, and dancing were indulged in. Dinner was laid in the large banqueting hall upstairs, and the tables were decorated with arum lilies, daffodils, and palms and fairy lights. The vestibule was a dream with fairy lights in miniature houses and castles, and palms and bowls of white arum lilies in every space. In the billiard room and smoke room were purple stocks". In the red drawing room were white spirea, white stocks and red fairy lights, in the pink drawing room were pink stocks and pink and white fairy lights, and on the porches and verandahs ivy, palms and arum lilies. The large vestibule was used for dancing. Bertram and Lucy Curzon-Smith's wedding was held on the 27th December, 1911, at St Phillip's Anglican Church, Eastwood, and of course the reception was held at "Curzon Hall". Again, the mansion was beautifully decorated. The porch and grand staircase featured masses of white wisteria and trails of ivy, and suspended from the archway in the vestibule was a large white wedding bell under which the bridal couple stood and received over 200 friends and relatives. Over the centre of the table in the large banqueting hall was another wedding bell from which hung a cupid. Harry Curzon-Smith saw himself as the Squire of Marsfield, and was involved in various local affairs. He donated a hall for the establishment of the Marsfield School of Arts, was president of the local Progress Association, held a ball and fireworks at "Curzon Hall" for the opening Marsfield School in 1901, a sit-down dinner for 114 after the establishment of Marsfield Park in 1902, and a picnic and sports day in the grounds in 1905 for the King's birthday. Despite this, Harry was said to have actually enjoyed a quiet home life and was not interested in being involved in politics or state affairs. Harry died at "Curzon Hall" on the 21st June, 1913, at the age of only 51. After a service held in the house, Harry was interred in the Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery. Isabella, who had assisted her husband in his business, took over his affairs including the Caves House lease until 1916. In 1915 she offered "Curzon Hall" and its grounds to accommodate 300 wounded soldiers and in 1917 remarried. In 1922 "Curzon Hall" and about 17 acres of land were acquired by the Vincentian Fathers and became St Joseph's Seminary for training priests and lay brothers. In 1933 the ballroom was converted into students' quarters, classrooms, a recreation room and twenty bedrooms. The stables were demolished in 1934 and a chapel was erected with the stone, built adjoining the southern side of the main house the following year. The chapel was dedicated in memory of the former Provincial of the Vincentians, Father Maurice Joseph O'Reilly (1866-1933). In 1967 a two-storey brick building was added to St Joseph's Seminary complex providing a library, conference room and classrooms. As part of a plan for a more open garden landscape around the main house, the picturesque stone walls in the garden were moved in 1969. Despite these extensive changes, the house remained basically unchanged and continued to be a landmark in the area. In 1980 the Fathers moved out of the College and it is fitting that the house, built for one of the State's most famous caterers, should be extensively renovated and converted into an elegant function centre which opened July 1983. No doubt Harry Smith would be delighted that over 120 years since his magnificent and elegant home was completed, it continues to be a very popular venue for weddings, balls, receptions, school formals and corporate events.
