Located down a quiet side street off busy Victoria Road in the Sydney suburb of Gladesville stands an elegant Victorian Regency house built in 1857. Called “Villa Maria” and later “The Priory”, it has a rich history being the built as the headquarters of the Marist Fathers missionary work in the Pacific. From 1888 the house had an even longer use accommodating patients from the nearby Gladesville Hospital for the Insane. The land on which Villa Maria was built was part of a 30 acre (12.1 ha) property belonging to William Johnston. In 1836 it was purchased by Thomas Stubbs (1802-1878), who erected a single-storey sandstone house there. Thomas had been born in NSW in 1802, the son of a Third Fleet convict, but left the colony in about 1812 to join the British Army’s 24th Regiment of Foot, the first currency lad to enlist. After his discharge, Thomas was permitted to return to Australia and arrived back in 1825. He sailed on board the “Lonarch” where he met his wife, Ann Elizabeth (nee Fitz) (1809-1881), who he married the following year at St Matthew’s Church of England, Windsor, NSW. In 1832 Thomas advertised the fact that he was a “Professor of the Royal Patent Kent Bugle”, a teacher of the flute, violin and French horn and a piano tuner. Perhaps his musical career did not pay the bills as in 1836, the year he purchased his property, he became a registered auctioneer. Thomas and Ann Elizabeth named their property, “Longwood”, after Longwood House on the island of St Helena, where Napoleon Bonaparte had died in 1821. In fact, one of Thomas’ sons, born in 1834, was called Napoleon. On “Longwood” Thomas and his family were assisted by two servants and a gardener but Thomas still had time to perform and compose music, including “The Australian Jubilee Waltz” in 1838. In 1847 Thomas sold Longwood and 18 acres (7.3 ha) of hillside land on the western slopes of Tarban Creek to the French missionary fathers of the Roman Catholic order, The Society of Mary (known as Marists). The Society of Mary had been founded in the diocese of Belley in France in 1822 by Jean-Claude Courveille (1787-1866) and Jean-Claude Colin (1790-1875) to undertake ministerial works in parishes, schools, hospital chaplaincies and foreign missions, while stressing the virtues of the Virgin Mary. The first Marist missionaries in the Pacific had arrived in Sydney as early as 1836, while two Marist Fathers, Jean-Louis Rocher (1809-1894) and Antoine Freydier-Dubreul, together with lay brother, Auguste Leblanc, arrived here in 1845, to found a supply base for their South Pacific missions. They carried a letter of introduction from the Cardinal Prefect of the Propaganda Fide, Rome, however, the Fathers were not well received in Sydney by Archbishop John Polding, who feared the Marists would complicate his plans to make Sydney an “abbey diocese” for his own Benedictine Order. Polding’s attitude caused the Marists to consider leaving Sydney and in May 1846 Freydier-Dubreul returned to Europe leaving Rocher in charge. Thomas’ cottage was purchased by Rocher and he renamed it “Villa Maria”. It served as a headquarters, store and place to recuperate for the missionaries after their arduous work. The dangerous nature of their undertakings was attested to by the fact that Rocher reported to the Superior-General that deaths from massacres and tropical diseases made the future of the mission off New Guinea very uncertain. Furthermore, a threatened slaughter of missionaries in New Caledonia had been narrowly averted by evacuating the Marists to the Sydney Mission headquarters. Other missionaries were not so fortunate. Father Peter Chanel (1803-1841) “met his martyrdom” after being clubbed to death on the island of Futuna, in the South Pacific, on 28 April 1841. His mummified remains were sent to New Zealand for seven years until moved to Sydney where they were temporarily placed in the community chapel at Villa Maria from May 1849 until January 1850 before being taken back to France. Paintings of Villa Maria executed in 1854 by an Italian artist and member of the Foreign Missionaries of Milan, who was staying at the house, show how it appeared at this time. They depict the main stone building as well as a wooden chapel, numerous temporary cottages, gardens, orchards, vineyards and a little wharf projecting into a stretch of water, since reclaimed. The small size of the available dwellings at the Mission and the large number of people sometimes needing accommodation, meant expansion of the Marist headquarters had become essential. In February, 1857, work commenced on major additions to the original cottage under the architect and civil engineer, William Weaver (1828-1868). Born in Somerset, England, Weaver had been a pupil of the civil engineers, Brassey and Peto of Bristol, and from 1846 trained in the office of Britain’s greatest engineer, I.K. Brunel, working on the Great Western Railway. Unwise investment in an unprofitable colliery saw Weaver migrate to Sydney in 1850. He became Edmund Blacket’s Clerk of Works in the Colonial Architect’s Office and in 1856 went into private practice at 25 Pitt Street, Sydney. The “Villa Maria” extensions are the only surviving example of his first year’s work. The Villa Maria commission involved demolishing an existing four-room building and reorientating the new mission building so it looked towards the harbour, taking full advantage of the site and its view. Sandstone was quarried on the site and stonemasons, including one of the Marist Brothers, Gennade Rolland, constructed a fine Victorian Regency style house at right angles to the original cottage. The new building is shown here with its symmetrical façade consisting of a two-storey central block with single-storey wings either side. Boxed eaves with supporting brackets, upper-storey windows with small panes, French windows on the ground floor with margin glazing and a panelled front door completed the picture of refinement and simple elegance. In 1859 Father Roche left Sydney on board the “Walter Hood” to return to France. In the fourteen years he had been Procureur for the Marist Missions in the South Pacific, the order’s missionary work had extended to cover nearly 2 million square miles (5,179,600 square km). The “Freeman’s Journal” at the time noted how “Young and zealous priests, nuns, and lay brothers have landed on these shores [in Sydney] without the publicity of an announcement, and silently sailed up the river [Parramatta] to the rendezvous at Villa Maria”. Despite the new additions, planned expansion of the Mission’s functions were in jeopardy because of the limitations for future development imposed by the deficiencies of the site and buildings. Even with the newly completed house, there were still inadequacies in the kitchen, chapel and the living quarters for the brothers. Villa Maria was also difficult to reach by road from Sydney and it lacked a deep-water wharf so the transport of goods by water was also a problem. In January 1860 a house and three acres of land came up for sale at Hunters Hill on the other side of Tarban Creek almost opposite Villa Maria. The new land included the much-needed deep-water wharf. More land subsequently became available and the Marists had a new, purpose-built monastery erected there in Mary Street, Hunters Hill. They moved to their new location in late 1865, taking the name, Villa Maria, with them. After they moved from Gladesville, attempts were made to sell the original Villa Maria to the New South Wales Government for the nearby Hospital for the Insane but they were unsuccessful. The Marists then retained the old property for some time and it was used as a convent. It was finally sold in 1874 to the Sydney solicitor, Thomas Salter, as his family home. By this time the property supported “forty kinds of fruit trees in an orchard” and a vineyard with stock said to have been brought from the Cape of Good Hope. Thomas renamed the property “The Priory” in deference to its former use. He had further additions made to the house in about 1875 with an L-shaped, picturesque Gothic extension, and remained there until he sold it in 1888. The auction notice in “The Sydney Morning Herald” for the site described The Priory as comprising a drawing room, breakfast room, library, four bedrooms, several smaller rooms, a bathroom with water laid on, dressing room, laundry, two pantries, servants’ rooms, kitchen and cellar as well as a detached stable. The 18-acre property also included a four-room cottage, was partly terraced and featured vegetable and fruit gardens and “well-grassed” paddocks. It was advertised as being located on one of the prettiest inlets of the Parramatta River, was close to the Gladesville Steamers’ wharf and the new road bridge to Sydney. Ultimately, The Priory was purchased by the State Government for part of Gladesville Hospital, providing arable land for the agricultural pursuits of Dr Frederic Norton Manning (1839-1903), Inspector of the Insane with responsibility for all the State mental institutions between 1879 and 1898. Dr Manning initiated radical changes to patient care, facilities, recreation and diet at the institutions under his care. He was Medical Superintendent at Gladesville, formerly called the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum, from 1868 to 1879, and in 1870 he established horticultural pursuits to provide patients with meaningful outdoor activities. At The Priory, extra rooms were added, a rear courtyard was formed by extending the sides of the house and small outbuildings erected around the grounds. The main house was used as ward accommodation and its fine rooms with their high ceilings housed rows of metal beds. The patients tended the gardens as part of their therapy and by 1953 it housed male patients whose beds of dahlias were renown and in 1975 The Priory was known as Ward 2 (of Gladesville Hospital). Following an inquiry into the health services of the psychiatrically ill, the Richmond Report of 1983 recommended that the New South Wales Government close its big hospital-based mental institutions and instead invest in a co-ordinated system of community services. Consequently, at the end of 1985, the last few patients were moved out of The Priory. In that year the house was externally restored and converted to a new use as the office of the Mental Health Tribunal and used for this purpose until 2003. Since 2007 it has been owned by Hunters Hill Council who are currently (2022) reviewing a development application for its reuse as a restaurant. References Advertising (1880, February 18).
