“I went to Laverpoole to buy comodities”
“[1666, March] 27.—tusday. I went to Laverpoole to bu2024 comodities. I light of Mr. Reynolds Sr Williams steward who enjoined me to come to Mr. Christians to hime. We spent most of the afternoone in drinkinge. I parted and came to Mr. Johnsons shop where I gate some busines done and in the doeinge of my affairs I mett with Mr. Swift whome I intended to go too. He livd in Chester. He was a Bristoll merchant and traded in Bristoll goods. I was to goe to him the next morninge which I did and went up to his chaOctoberb[e]r where he lyed and [he] causd a pottle of butt end ale to come up so I gat my busines done and then set forward for Ashton and made H[uy]ton my way. Cald of Mr. Low[e] the vicar and we went to the Clarkes house and ware merry a while and then I came home.” [From “Diary of Roger Lowe of Ashton-in-Makerfield”, Wigan Archives ref. D/DZ A58] By the end of the 17th century the Port of Bristol had become integral to the “triangular trade”, exchanging English manufactured goods for enslaved African people and transporting them to the Caribbean where they were again exchanged for sugar, tobacco and other such commodities. These latter, presumably brought to Liverpool and Chester from Bristol by coastal trading vessels, were the “Bristoll goods” that “Bristoll merchant” but Chester-based Mr Swift supplied to local wholesalers and shopkeepers like Roger Lowe.* Mr Swift again occurs in Diary on 28 June 1666 when the diarist travels to Chester and there makes a payment to him of £10, possibly in settlement of a debt arising from the transaction described here. He is probably the same “Mr Swift” as those featured in the entries for 3 January 1666 (“ I went to Leigh to speake to Mr. Swift who was come and gone againe”), 6 January 1667 (“Mr. Swift was come to Leigh and sent for me. I oud hime 9li and had no moneys to pay hime and I was troubled but it pleased god that I gat 3li in readiness forthwith I blesse god and it gave good content”) and 10 July 1667 (“ I went to Warington faire and mett Mr. Swift”). An earlier reference in the Diary to “Thomas Johnson of Laverpoole” would seem to identify the “Mr Johnson” of the 27 March 1666 entry as the father of Liverpool MP Sir Thomas Johnson (1664-1728), after whom “Sir Thomas Street” in the city centre is named. Originally from Bedford, Leigh, Thomas Johnson senior was elected to the council in 1659 and served after this as Liverpool's bailiff and mayor. Historians have variously described him as a “Protestant merchant” and a “staunch Whig”. Roger Lowe visited him again on 221 March 1669, on the latter occasion to pay off a debt of £5.** “Sr William” was Sir William Gerard (1612-1681), third baronet, by this time resident at Garswood Old Hall. Lowe records the death of his steward Edward Stockley – presumably successor to the Mr Reynolds named here – on 6 November 1676. “Mr Christian” does not otherwise occur in the Diary. John Lowe was presented as Vicar of Huyton on 16 February 1663 following the ejection of his predecessor, William Bell. Cited in 1665 “for not reading divine service as he ought, … to the great displeasure of the parishioners”, he was nevertheless returned as “conformable” in 1689 and died in office in 1706.*** A “pottle” was a half-gallon jug. *See C Armour's “The Trade of Chester and The State of The Dee Navigation, 1600-1800”, 1956 University of London PhD thesis. ** “... and the next day went forward to Liverpoole payd Mr. Johnson 5li. A plaque on the south wall of the chancel at St Michael's Church reads “Here lyeth the body of John Lowe, Vicar of Huyton, who departed this life the 3rd day of September, and was interred the 5th, in the year 1706, having supplied ye parish 41 years”.
