Since this photo was taken only a small distance from Glen Waverley, the suburb immortalised in Bill Henson's photographs from The light fades but the gods remain (2019), it is only reasonable to try a photograph inspired by him.
Henson is the master of chiaroscuro, where the light emerges from the darkness. Everything is soft and atmospheric. This is partly because even today he still shoots only film, but mainly because he creates a mood in his pictures. Bill Henson still studies the old masters and his photographs look like paintings because they are inspired by them. He is not much interested in photography itself.
I really want to encourage you to take a look at Bill Henson's latest release of pictures at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney. The works are of New York City at night and taken in 1989 on 35mm colour negative film. To say they are luminous is an understatement.
