I should spend more time setting up opportunities like this.
From a set taken 21 May 2023.
The squabbles are endless where seed has been put out. Chaffinches always give way to Goldfinches which are the most aggressive small birds in the garden- by far.
The light - for my requirements needs to be a bright as possible but not casting shadows. Attempts at 'contra jour' light lucency of the wings need a different set up entirely.
The settings are into the extremes of what will bring a satisfactory image. 1/4000th , ISO 5000, F9. Normally to avoid the slow F setting of longer lenses, I tend to mount the camera on the tripod close to the subjects, to maximise depth of field possibilities, while I retire with a remote trigger to a sensible distance. (But not in this case).
The images are taken on 'Pro Capture' fast sequencing, which takes images all the time the shutter is half depressed at up to 120 images per sec, but discards these when fully depressed, saving to the card, only about 5 or 6 before and after the full shutter depression. It is a very crafty feature that was pioneered by Olympus and is a result of them using in their cameras what is fundamentally a video chip giving the ability of recording so many images per second.
There is a huge amount of work discarding the unwanted images - many hundreds, sometime thousands, to finish with the best to work with and edit.
Keeping all the birds involved inside the frame margins is often impossible, so a certain amount of luck there.
This was ignored in May 2023 as not being good enough. But I allow myself to change my mind sometimes. Review is a core requirement of anything leading to any success.
