This antique lantern comes from the lighthouse at Isla Granda (Toro Point Light), when the station was converted 07 June, 1972 from acetylene gas to automated battery operation.
The lantern is approximately 6 feet high and 3 feet in diameter and is mounted on a metal display base.
The name plate affixed to the lantern reads: "F. Barbier & Cia. Constructors, Paris, France, 1893. It was originally constructed to operate with oil and dates back to the period of the French effort to build the Canal.
The 1997 established museum is devoted to the history of the Panama Canal construction in its various stages, including the first French attempt, later by the United States, and the eventual transfer to Panamanian control.
The museum building was built as the Grand Hotel built by French businessman George Low opened in 1875.
1881 the building was sold to Count Ferdinand de Lesseps in 1881. From then on it would be the headquarters of the Universal Company of the French Interoceanic Canal.
Most of the building was used for offices, except for one floor which would lodge high-ranking employees.
After the French canal construction failure, the current Panama Canal Museum building was used by the United States Canal Commission for 4 years until they moved to Balboa in 1910.
The Panamanian government bought the building in 1915 to use it as public offices. As the years passed, it deteriorated like most of the buildings in Casco Viejo.
In 1996 the Board of Trustees of the Interoceanic Canal Museum was created. Restoration work started immediately and the first part of the museum was inaugurated in 1997, while the full construction took six years

The altarpiece is a work from the end of the 19th century, very possibly made by French masters who worked for the construction of the Panama Canal.
The building sited on Independence Plaza was built between 1688 & 1796 with plans from architect and military engineer Nicolás Rodríguez.
The long time construction time frame was due to fires that razed the older wooden structures and in 1737, a huge fire burned it and most of the old city. The church seen today is from modified plans of 1741 to make the building more spacious and light.
The building was declared a National Historic Monument in 1941.

The altar is made of carved wood and is covered in gold leaf.
Originally this was in a church in Panama City, but when Morgan attacked the city the Jesuits painted the altar black to hide the gold.
This deceived the pirates into thinking it was worthless so was not touched.
The altar was then moved to the new church in the present location. The altar is considered to be one of the Panama’s greatest treasures. Both, church and altar are dedicated to St. Joseph.
The church was one of the first to be built in the area but in 1737.
