Dean Lane 1989-2009
A few shots at or near Dean Lane railway station, Manchester, beginning with first-generation DMUs in December 1989. In 1999, I happened to catch 66115 starting from the siding with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal containers, known (unsurprisingly) as "binliners". These still run, but no longer cross to the up line, which now has the single-platform "Newton Heath and Moston" Metrolink stop, the freights using the former down line in both directions. Forward to 2009, just before closure as a heavy rail station, and two northbound trains approach Dean Lane, one seen taking the Oldham branch at Thorps Bridge (with the Metrolink flyover ready in the background) and the other passing Newton Heath TMD, taken from Dean Lane itself. We then see a few Pacers coming and going, some stopping, some on the Oldham-Shaw-Rochdale 'express' service, before ending with a still shot of a Black 5 with the Oldham portion of a returning Southport excursion in 1967.

1966 Nancy Sinatra with Miniskirt, Boots and Records
Vintage image of Nancy Sinatra in her miniskirt, boots (which were getting old by then) and her record collection. Nice that her listening choices were dad’s friends Dean, Tony, and Lena. This found photograph is from the private collection of an unknown and/or unknowing art collector. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!

Auburndale
It wasn't a simple chase given the detour on Highway 13 but I wasn't stressed, I knew the ore load was headed to Stevens Point as was I, I should get another shot or two. I hadn't seriously shot this stretch since the new four-lane Highway 10 was built out to Marshfield. I knew the overpass on old 10 at Auburndale should provide a nice morning view and it certainly did. As a nice bonus with the old highway now rechristened a sleepy county road, it's a much more relaxing place to wait than it used to be. With no opposition at Auburndale the ore continues its steady progress across the Superior Sub. July 20, 2024.
32# Tottenham Court Road Station in London.
Nowadays, visitors to London will see the famous tube symbol – a bold red circle with a blue line striking through it – all over town. And the 'roundel', as it's known, is more than 100 years old. It was first introduced in 1908, and you can spot it in this 1920s photo showing the exterior of Tottenham Court Road station.
Tottenham Court Road is an interchange station in the West End of London for London Underground and Elizabeth line services.
The London Underground station is served by the Central and Northern lines. On the Central line the station is between Oxford Circus and Holborn stations, and on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line it is between Goodge Street and Leicester Square stations. The Elizabeth line station is between Bond Street and Farringdon stations.
The station is located at St Giles Circus, the junction of Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Street, New Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road and is in Travelcard Zone 1, with a second entrance at Dean Street.
History:
The station opened as part of the Central London Railway (CLR) on 30 July 1900. From that date until 24 September 1933 the next station eastbound on the Central line was the now-defunct British Museum; the next stop in that direction is now Holborn. The platforms are under Oxford Street west of St Giles' Circus and were originally connected to the ticket hall via lifts at the east end of the platforms. The original station building was on the south side of Oxford Street and was designed in common with other CLR stations by Harry Bell Measures. The building and its neighbours were demolished in 2009.
Visitation - Dean Ramos
"Visitation : Dean Ramos", 2024. 11.5" x 6.5". graphite on Schoellerhammer drawing board.
In the drawing project that I have been consumed with for the last few years each drawing is of a person that I know or who has been of particular meaningfulness to me (or both). The drawings are something of a metaphorically charged meditation on the individual depicted. In the case of this drawing the image is largely based on a photograph that I took years ago of Dean Ramos when he came to visit my daughter Temma who was in the hospital. Temma has at various times been hospitalized, but this visit by Dean was an unusual gesture of support by a student. Dean, who is now a professor of art at Miracosta College in California, was clearly a very committed art student. But this particular gesture of solidarity / compassion moved well beyond the typical student / teacher relationship.
The title "Visitation" refers to that visit Dean made, but it moves into somewhat different territory (also about a kind of solidarity) in relation to the Biblical story of the meeting of Elizabeth (pregnant with John the Baptist) and Mary (pregnant with Jesus). That story is quoted obscurely in the dark image in the upper left of the drawing: a sliver of a painting of the Visitation by Jacques Daret
