SJW 536S - 1977 Triumph TR7 Sprint
BMC and Leyland Show, Gaydon, 14 July 2024
One of around 60 TR7s built at Speke with the 16v version of the slant-four engine from the Dolomite Sprint. The Speke factory closed shortly afterwards and the Sprint was cancelled due to the backlog of standard TR7 orders following the move to Canley, and there is much debate over whether it was ever seriously intended for production or just a means of homologating the 16v engine for rallying.

The TR7 was launched in 1975, with its distinctive wedge shape designed in house by Harris Mann and powered by a slant-four 8 valve engine of 1998cc. of 105bhp that shares the same basic design as the Triumph Dolomite 1850 engine, Originally available as a Coupe, with the Convertible following
The development of a V8-engined version, required an addition bulge in the bonnet, to clear the carburettors. This produced the ;double bulge or double bump bonnet, characteristic of TR7s and TR8s built at Canley and Solihull.
The TR7-V8 sold in the UK1978-80 was developed as a homologation special derivative of the TR7, produced in Coupe form by BL Motorsport at Abingdon well before the launch of the near identical TR8 went on sale. The first Rally cars were converted TR7s, all had heavily tuned Rover V8s with an output of up to 300bhp in competition form allied to a five speed gearbox. No de-tuned road cars were sold and all had four wheel disc brakes, fat alloy wheels and major rear suspension changes.
The TR8 was finally launched in 1980, delayed from 1978 due to industrial action and BLs financial traumas. Intended solely for the US market and built in Coupe and Convertible variants and powered by 3626cc V8 detuned to 135bhp for the USA'

The aim of Himalayan Balsam bashing is to pull up the invasive plants before they set seed. By cutting off the seed supply, it stops Himalayan Balsam from growing again next year.
Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant that grows in dense colonies on the banks of brooks, streams, rivers and lakes. Balsam colonies can unbalance the waterside ecosystem, reducing plant and wildlife biodiversity.
The lofty balsam plant can grow more than 3 metres high in just a few months. When it grows in colonies, the large leaves block sunlight from reaching native plants, which then struggle to survive. With fewer plant species growing on the bankside, wildlife is impacted. At greatest risk is the water vole, an endangered creature which relies on British native plants for its food.

These Himalayan Balsam plants are just ten weeks old. Left in the ground, the balsam plants would have continued to grow taller until they flowered in late July.
