FNB Kitchen
Food Not Bombs (FNB) is an international organization that supports people who are food insecure by reclaiming imperfect produce and distributing freshly made meals. In the Baltimore City chapter, the organization weekly collects “unsellable” fruits and vegetables from a downtown warehouse, cooks vegetarian meals with the gleaned produce, then distributes the food in multiple locations throughout the city. This past week I had the privilege of assisting these volunteers in food preparation at the St. Luke’s Church kitchen. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #12 “Reasonable consumption and production” A huge component of waste produced through human processes is uneaten food, implicating wasted farm-ecosystem resources. According to the twelfth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal “Reasonable consumption and production”, approximately one trillion dollars are lost yearly to food waste, amounting to a third of total food production. This is unsustainable, especially considering the continued exorbitant global population growth. The Food Not Bombs Project reduces waste by gathering food that would otherwise be sent to a dumpster. The act of reclaiming “waste” food helps to close the loop in the consumption-production cycle. Tightening the consumption-production cycle is important for reducing food waste which in turn alters energy use efficiency and ecosystem-level energy flow. All ecosystem processes require energy including organism growth, human, plant, or otherwise. Thermodynamically, growing unused food is inefficient because much energy gained from solar exposure is lost as heat during the plant's developmental processes. This is an important consideration when many farmers are looking to rent land to solar companies because traditional farming methods are failing to turn a profit. If the energy from the sun was collected in panels over a growing season rather than given to unused produce, more clean energy could be provided to the grid, reducing reliance on coal and natural gas. Volteric farming does address this by providing opportunities to grow crops and place solar panels in the same plot, but this is not yet a scalable solution. Other energy and resource cycles are inefficiently drawn from as well in order to produce food. Because of destructive farming practices at commercial level operations, soils structure, organic matter, and nutrient richness have been severely diminished on a global scale. According to the UN we are facing a topsoil crisis (United Nations, 2022). Continuing to drain limited resources in order to grow food that is later wasted is unsustainable for addressing prevalent issues such as clean energy requirements and nutrient needs for a large and growing population. Reducing waste in the production-consumption cycle of produce requires food to be grown more intentionally, managed more efficiently, and valued more deeply as a precious resource. SDG #2 “Zero Hunger” Addressing food insecurities in Baltimore City not only supports the nutritional needs of residents but also helps people by addressing food justice issues. Food Not Bombs deliberately distributes meals in “food desert” areas of the city. These are areas where resistants do not have access to fresh produce due to the lack of grocery stores and lack of financial access to further away stores that do carry produce. Hunger is not an issue of food production, rather an issue of distribution and imposed access barriers. As the second UN SDG aiming for Zero Hunger puts it, “With enough food to feed everyone on the planet, why are there so many hungry people? Poor harvesting practices, as well as food wastage have contributed to food scarcity”. The efforts of FNB help to mitigate food waste by conducting weekly gleaning. Gleaning produce is the process of collecting leftover fruits and vegetables that are not “store quality”; these have growth deformities or bruising from industrial harvesters. Because the FNB organization prepares cooked meals with their gleaned produce, the initial food presentation at collection does not impact the product they provide. Distribution locations are chosen based on need and the need in Baltimore is greatest where redlining took place. Hunger is a justice issue and is highly racialized in America due to systemic racism. Redlining districts meant that urban centers inhabited by people of color were marked on maps as areas risky for investment; through redlining public service and financial growth were “excused” from engaging in POC neighborhoods. Though Baltimore was officially readlined from the 1930’s until the 1968 Fair Housing Act, areas of the city previously redlined still experience the disparaging impacts of racist governance. The goal of Zero Hunger cannot be achieved without examining and dismantling intersectional injustices, food justice and racial justice are further linked through medical inequities. Food is a preventative medicine. Healthy food that is nutritionally dense like produce, boosts the immune system as nutrition helps fight disease (Aman, Masood, 2020). This includes COVID-19 which is still mutating and disproportionately affecting people with limited economic means such as the people serviced by FNB. Reducing food deserts, supporting public health, and providing fresh nutritious meals, the Food Not Bombs organization combats hunger and intersectional racial injustices. Aman F, Masood S. The United States Federal Reserve System
Money flow is crucial to any modern capitalist society. The US Federal Reserve facilitates the smooth functioning of the economic and financial lives of the population. It does this primarily through its mandate for stability; without stability, the financial lifeforce of a Nation State is severely compromised, resulting in economic chaos, suffering and hardship for the Nation's people. Therefore the Federal Reserve plays a crucial role as a modern governmental institution. We may form a dim or cynical view of government institutions, but this is fundamentally erroneous - without the societal lubricants, the societal powerlines that modern institutions such as the Federal Reserve, and also for example, the State Department, offer, the lives of ordinary citizens would be stultified and rendered primitive. This is because the functioning of these vital institutions provide security, stability, peace and prosperity so that ordinary people can live out their lives and pursue happiness. Controlling the money supply and providing liquidity may seem like obscure, functionally distant, or abstruse considerations, but in fact a healthy banking system is a crucial component in the safety and wellbeing of the individual, family and social community, through the provision of the stable use of money. Without money as a basic unit of exchange, how would individuals and social groups be able to transact in the modern economy? In the social and economic milieu of St Francis of Assisi, who came from a family of wealthy cloth merchants, the economic realities of Europe were shifting. For centuries, illiquid land had been the basis of wealth. However, with the rise of urbanisation and city living, fiat money began to have an instrumental role instead. This created a moral dilemma for those of St Francis' day: surely a highly liquid and portable bag of gold coins was a more graspable and tangible notion of wealth, and could lead men into avarice? Yet money is essential to transact and live, in whatever varying degrees of quantity we may possess it. It is not the money itself which forms an existential burden on our souls, but an inordinate attachment to even a little amount, or perhaps to a large amount. We transact with money but it is a tool of exchange and not an object of intrinsic worth independent of its exchange value. The Federal Reserve acknowledges the realities of the modern fiat based economy, and facilitates a maximum level of stability within the money supply, which acts as a kind of lifeblood supporting individuals and businesses. The temptations to avarice remain of course even with an intrinsically valueless paper currency. For what is a paper note really worth except the credence that exists between two parties? And who operates this principle of credence systematically on a macro level, if not the Central Bank known as the Federal Reserve? We can form attachments to a collection of paper notes, or even to a digital number in a virtual electronic system (which on the face of it seems absurd). But the proper and ordered use of money is to use it prudently to transact and obtain our goods and services, while avoiding an undue emotional clutching to the medium of those goods and services itself. The Federal Reserve broadens and distributes the flow of money to all of the people: this function is vital for very survival; how we feel about our relationship with money depends on whether we use it carefree (as an instrument) or feel weighed down in the very unit of transaction itself. But the Federal Reserve is universal: it serves everyone.
