2021-04-20 Day 110/365
With snow on the way, I figured I wouldn't be able to wait for a blue-sky day to stop by the apricot orchard at one of our local microbreweries. The owners were fruit farmers long before they started making beer. Their apricot beer is pretty decent.

Vehicle train
BNSF is running a westbound vehicle train past Duffy. Here, looking west from Murphy Road, a seemingly endless line of vehicle cars disappears into a distant walnut orchard. An irrigation pump and the adjacent standpipe that helps regulate fluctuations in pumping rates stand near a tributary to Littlejohns Creek. Ag and rail infrastructure abound in the San Joaquin Valley.

What railroad is this anyway?
Today Duffy is triple tracked. Trains are often parked here waiting for crews. The site is east of Stockton, CA and east of Mariposa Yard, in the middle of grape vineyards and almond and walnut orchards. This train has been here all day, awaiting a crew. No matter, nothing in the consist has an expiration date, and many of the cars are empties. Crews clearly have made their opinion known in the labeling of the stairway. This is Santa Fe Country, no corporate restructuring, new paint scheme or decades of new initials will interfere with the facts, That warbonnet C-44-9W bringing up the rear of this consist is a testament to the enduring heritage of this line.

Orchard Spider
Leucauge (loo-kah-gee) is a spider genus of long-jawed orb weavers or orchard-spider, with over 160 species and fully pantropical distribution. The body and leg shapes and the silver, black and yellow markings of Leucauge females make identification of the genus relatively easy. They have two rows of long, slender curved hairs on the femurs of the fourth leg (see it in the picture - the fourth leg near the abdomen has curved hairs). In most cases the web is slanted rather than vertical and the spider rests in the middle of the web with its underside facing upwards. L. venusta has silver or yellow markings.

Hi Ken,
photo from the Black Diamonds team from 1965.
The picture was taken at the semi-final of the Cunningham Cup between Black Diamonds and Orchard Villa in which Diamonds won 3-2.
The team went on to beat Sloans 1-0 in the final at Richmond Park.
