There is no single best mulch, only the best one for your beds. For low-maintenance beds and paths, chunky bark or woodchip mulch lasts longest and holds weeds back well. For veggie patches and new plantings where you want to feed the soil, a fine mulch like sugar cane or compost breaks down faster and does more for the soil, but it needs topping up more often. For most Sydney garden beds, 50mm to 75mm is the sweet spot, and 75mm is the usual all-round depth for weed control and holding moisture. Push it to 100mm where you want heavy weed suppression, on slopes or in native beds. Do not go much past 100mm, or water struggles to reach the roots, and always keep mulch pulled back off plant stems and tree trunks so they do not rot. We set the depth per bed when we spread.

Yes. Most jobs are supply and spread: we bring the mulch, prep the beds and spread it at the right depth, then leave the area clean. If you would rather just have the mulch dropped off to spread yourself, or you already have a pile and only need it spread properly, we can do that too. Whichever suits, you get one fixed quote for the agreed scope.

Mulch helps a lot, but it does not stop weeds completely, and we will not pretend it does. A good layer over a properly weeded bed blocks the light most weed seeds need, so far fewer come through and the ones that do are easy to pull. Weeds still find edges and thin spots over time. The trick is weeding the bed first, laying enough depth, and a light top-up down the track. Lay mulch over an unweeded bed and you just give the weeds a head start underneath.

Work out the bed area in square metres, pick a depth, and multiply, keeping the depth in metres. So area times depth equals cubic metres of mulch. As a guide, one cubic metre covers about 20m² at 50mm, 13m² at 75mm, or 10m² at 100mm. A 6m by 4m bed at 75mm works out around 1.8m³. Round up a little, because mulch settles as it beds in. Usually, yes. Mulch performs far better over a clean, weeded bed, because weeds left underneath will push straight up through a fresh layer. Prepping the bed first also gives a neater finish and lets us spread the mulch evenly. Where a bed needs it, we can clear the weeds first as part of the same visit, then mulch over the top.

Yes. Tree mulching in Sydney is popular for protecting root zones and reusing suitable material after tree work. We lay woodchip in a ring around the trunk, kept clear of the bark to avoid collar rot. If your garden needs the tree work done first, we can handle that side too, then mulch once the beds are clear.
