Three ways to work with us
Supply Only, Supply And Spread, Or Spread Your Own
Not every job needs the same thing. Some people want the mulch dropped off and will spread it themselves. Most want the lot done. And plenty already have mulch sitting in the driveway and just want it spread properly. Pick the one that suits, or ask us which makes sense for your beds.
Option 1
Supply only
We work out the right mulch type and quantity for your beds and arrange delivery. You handle the spreading in your own time.
Option 2
Most popular
Supply and spread
The full job. We bring the mulch, prep the beds, spread it at the right depth and leave the area clean. Nothing for you to lift or measure.
Option 3
Spread your own mulch
Already got a pile in the driveway? We prep the beds and spread mulch you have already bought, at the right depth with a tidy finish.
Mulch type guide
Which Mulch Suits Your Sydney Garden?
Bark, woodchip, sugar cane and compost mulch all look different, last different lengths of time and suit different beds. There is no single best mulch, only the best one for your plants, your look and how much upkeep you want. Here is the short version, with no prices, just what each one is good at.
| Mulch type | Look | Lifespan | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bark mulch | Tidy, even colour, chunky pieces | Long, slow to break down | Formal and front garden beds where a clean, consistent finish matters |
| Woodchip mulch | Natural timber tones, varied chunky texture | Long, breaks down slowly | Paths, tree bases, native and low-maintenance beds that want good coverage |
| Sugar cane mulch | Light straw colour, soft and fine | Short, breaks down fast, needs regular top-ups | Veggie patches and new plantings where feeding the soil is the goal |
| Compost or leaf mulch | Dark, fine, soil-like | Shortest, feeds the soil as it breaks down | Planting beds and tired soil that needs building up, not just covering |
A quick rule of thumb
Chunky, slow-breakdown mulches like bark and woodchip are the low-maintenance pick and hold weeds back longest. Fine, fast-breakdown mulches like sugar cane and compost feed the soil quickly but need topping up more often. Tell us your plants and how much fuss you want, and we will point you at the right one.
How much mulch do I need?
Coverage Guide: Depth And How Much To Order
Mulching is one of the cheapest upgrades a garden can get. Done right, it works on four fronts at once, which is why it is worth doing properly rather than in a rush.
The one-line formula
Work out your bed area in square metres, pick a depth, and multiply. Depth has to be in metres, so drop the millimetres to a decimal.
Area (m²) × depth (m) = mulch needed (m³)
50mm = 0.05m
75mm = 0.075m
100mm = 0.1m
Worked example: a 6m by 4m bed is 24m². At 75mm (0.075m), that is 24 × 0.075 = 1.8m³ of mulch. Round up a touch, because mulch settles as it beds in.
The depths we use most often, and what each one is for.
| Depth | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 50mm | Veggie beds, new seedlings, light top-ups | Thinner cover, weeds get through sooner |
| 75mm | Most garden beds, the all-round pick | Good balance of weed control and moisture |
| 100mm | Heavy weed suppression, slopes, native beds | Uses more mulch, keep it off stems |
A couple of rules we stick to: keep mulch a good 50mm to 100mm back off plant stems and tree trunks so they do not rot, and do not pile it deeper than about 100mm, or water struggles to reach the roots. Not sure on your numbers? Send a photo and rough measurements and we will size it for you.
Why mulch at all
What A Proper Mulch Layer Actually Does
Two things decide how much mulch a bed needs: the area, and how deep you lay it. Get the depth right and the mulch works harder and lasts longer. Here is the simple maths, plus the depths we use across most Sydney gardens.
Holds moisture
A mulch layer shades the soil and slows evaporation, so beds dry out less in Sydney heat and you water less often through summer.
Knocks weeds back
Mulch blocks the light weed seeds need to fire up. It will not stop every weed, but a good layer over a weeded bed makes them far easier to manage.
Protects the soil
It covers bare, tired soil, evens out soil temperature and, as organic mulch breaks down, feeds the soil and supports healthier plants.
Lifts the look
A fresh, even mulch line instantly reads neat and finished. It is the fastest way to make a whole garden, and the street front, look maintained.
Honest about weeds
Mulch helps a lot with weeds, but nobody can promise weed-free forever, and we will not pretend otherwise. Weeds still find gaps, edges and thin spots over time. The result that lasts comes from weeding the bed properly first, laying enough depth, and a light top-up down the track. We will tell you straight what your beds need.
Weeds out before mulch goes down
Mulch laid over an unweeded bed just gives the weeds a head start underneath. Where a bed needs it, we clear the weeds first with our weeding services, then mulch over a clean surface so the layer actually holds. One team, one visit, one fixed quote.
Proof
See What Fresh Mulch Does To A Tired Bed
Mulching is a highly visual job. A bare, dry, patchy bed and the same bed after a clean prep and an even mulch layer are barely recognisable. Before-and-after shots show it better than any promise.
