History of the cemetery
The southern cemetery, initially 28 hectares in size, was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century; the first burial took place on April 2, 1904. Contrary to the fashion at the time, local wood was chosen for planting. The cemetery chapel with mortuary was completed in 1908. These buildings, which are now listed buildings, were designed by the architects city building officer Johannes Radke and city architect Max Decker; the two sculptures of the angel of death on the main portal of the chapel and the Art Nouveau lion were by the sculptor Adolf Simatschek.
The layout of the cemetery followed the cross motif including a final roundel. Today, however, this is no longer possible because the old main path was abandoned and planted in the 1960s.
Around 1,000 war graves were laid out in the cemetery for those who died in the two world wars.
The southern cemetery today
The southern cemetery continues to be used. The planting of deciduous trees is strong and consists primarily of oaks, limes, elms and maples. The total area today is 46.1 hectares.
In addition to the war graves, the honorary graves of the former mayors Karl Arnold, Georg Glock and Josef Gockeln as well as the actor Paul Henckels, known from the German film “Die Feuerzangenbowle”, are also striking points. There is also an anonymous urn grave field.
Due to the historical nature of the entire complex, the southern cemetery has been under garden monument protection since 1994/95. In the southern cemetery there is a communal grave leased by the punk rock band Die Toten Hosen, in which all band members are to be buried after their death and where drummer Wölli[1], manager Jochen Hülder and roadie Uwe Faust are currently buried.
