Holly Tree Bashing - Park Wood - 16 Nov 2024
Holly Trees growing close together can make a woodland dark and gloomy. Sunlight is unable to reach the woodland floor due to the thick leaves which stay on the holly tree all year round.
This impacts biodiversity in the woodland, as other tree species do not have enough light for seeds to germinate. Gradually over time, a species rich woodland (oak, chestnut, birch) can turn into a wood dominated by holly trees.
Warwick Volunteers are increasing light levels in Park Wood by thinning out the holly trees. Habitat piles are created from the cut down trees providing shelter for creatures that live in the woodland.
This conservation work also encourages bluebells to colonise the area where holly trees have been removed.

Moat Cottage
Parkes NSW.
This building is a replica of the Moat Cottage where Australian Statesman and 'Father of Federation' Sir Henry Parkes (1815 - 1896) was born in Canley, Country Warwickshire, near the city of Coventry, England. The original Moat Cottage is thought to be constructed in the 17th century and still stands.
This replica of Moat Cottage reflects the humble beginnings of Sir Henry Parkes and serves as a symbol of Australia's oldest Sister City link between Parkes and Coventry (1938). Parkes was named in honour of the great statesman, changing it's name from Bushmans to Parkes in 1873.
