Nature Conservation team from Warwick Volunteers enjoying an afternoon of balsam bashing along Canley Brook. Around 5000 balsam plants were cleared from the bankside during a 4.5 hour session.
The aim of Himalayan Balsam bashing is to pull up the invasive plants before they set seed. By cutting off the seed supply, it stops Himalayan Balsam from growing again next year.
Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant that grows in dense colonies on the banks of brooks, streams, rivers and lakes. Balsam colonies can unbalance the waterside ecosystem, reducing plant and wildlife biodiversity.
The lofty balsam plant can grow more than 3 metres high in just a few months. When it grows in colonies, the large leaves block sunlight from reaching native plants, which then struggle to survive. With fewer plant species growing on the bankside, wildlife is impacted. At greatest risk is the water vole, an endangered creature which relies on British native plants for its food.

These Himalayan Balsam plants are just ten weeks old. Left in the ground, the balsam plants would have continued to grow taller until they flowered in late July.

The first production road Triumph TR2 left the Triumph works at Canley in August 1953; thereafter production was very slow for several months. Just 250 cars were built prior to 1954 of which only 50 stayed within the UK. At the start of 1954, production increased and TR2s began to dominate the home market. This was due to Triumph's determination that a reasonable

Samara Canley | "A Walk Through Black History in the U.S: Hope for Change"
Award of Merit | Middle School (grades 6-8) | Geiger Montessori PTSA, Washington
I’m hopeful because over the history of the U.S.A. Black voices weren’t heard. I have hope that discrimination will be eliminated. My dance shows you three periods in Black history, which I portray with my wardrobe and music. “The Purchaser’s Option” song describes the experiences of enslaved people. My second song, “Strange Fruit” refers to lynching in the South post-slavery. Finally, “Glory” talks about both civil rights movement activists, and acts of discrimination currently displayed in the media. The song discusses hope for the future, and that we’ll keep advocating for change until we receive it.
