Many people may be familiar with Oatlands House, which has been a popular wedding reception venue for over 70 years. Located in the Sydney suburb of Oatlands, not far from Parramatta, the house has a very interesting history and is one of the oldest homes in the Parramatta area, being built in the late 1830s. Oatlands House was erected on a 90 acre (36.4 ha) grant made in 1833 to Pierce (Percy) Simpson (1789-1877). Percy was born in Canada, became a naval captain then a Lieutenant in the Royal Corsican Rangers. Between 1813 and 1817 he was Governor of the small Ionian Island of Paxos, in the Ionian Sea, west of Greece. In 1817 Percy’s regiment was reduced and he was placed on half pay so he migrated to New South Wales in 1822 with his wife, Hester Elizabeth (nee MacNeill) and family. Percy was appointed commandant of a convict settlement near Wellington in the Central West of New South Wales, a position he held between 1823 and 1826. Two years later he was appointed superintendent of the Great North Road construction then a Crown Lands Commissioner in 1833. It appears that Oatlands House had been built by 1837 as according to “The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser” Percy and Hester’s son, George Bowen Simpson, was born there on 22 May 1837. The house was constructed of locally quarried sandstone and consisted of a low single-storey building, the front facade of which featured two curved sections on either side of the entrance. French doors, with typical narrow glazing bars, opened out onto the curved flagstone verandah while above the front entrance a gable broke the slate roofline. Behind the house was a flagged courtyard with separate kitchen and servants’ quarters and under the main house were cellars. In December 1838, tragedy struck Percy’s family when his eldest son, Torquil Adolphus, aged 18, died at Oatlands of influenza. Percy was appointed the Police Magistrate for the district of Patricks Plains (Singleton) in 1839 in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales and it appears the Simpson family then left Oatlands to live where he worked. Oatlands was purchased in 1840 by James Brindley Bettington (1796-1857). James was named for, and the grandson of, the famous English engineer and canal builder, James Brindley (1716-1772). After some years as a general merchant and wool importer in his London family business, James Bettington arrived in Sydney in 1827 to establish a wool-broker’s office and to breed Saxon sheep. He began business as a shipping agent and leased 700 acres (283.3 ha) of government land at Rooty Hill for his imported sheep and shepherds. The land was near two famous horse studs, Veteran Hall, belonging to the former explorer, William Lawson, and Thomas Icely’s “Bungarribee”. James began breeding horses too and in 1830 married Lawson’s daughter, Rebecca. James then retired from his Sydney businesses in 1837 and the Bettingtons made Oatlands House their permanent home in 1840. In the 1840s a two-storey wing on the eastern side of the house was added. It comprised a central elliptical-shaped two-storey sandstone block with lantern recesses either side of the front door and a curved verandah supported by columns (as shown in the photograph here). The addition accommodated a drawing room, dining and morning rooms. The floors are cedar, said to have been grown on the property, and the walls of sandstone quarried nearby. The architect responsible for this work was Rebecca Bettington’s brother-in-law, Ambrose Hallen. It has been said that convicts were used to erect this wing. By the 1850s James Bettington was growing grapes on the property and making wine, including muscat and a white wine produced from Verdelho grapes traditionally grown in Portugal. He died in 1857 and his wife, Rebecca, continued to live at Oatlands House. In 1865 the house was the scene of a tragic accident when a worker, Nicholas Foran, who had been stacking wine into Mrs Bettington’s cellar, accidentally tripped on the iron hinge of the cellar’s trapdoor and fell to his death. Rebecca Bettington passed away herself in San Francisco in 1882, aged 69. In the meantime, James and Rebecca’s son, also called James Brindley Bettington (1837-1915), built a homestead on his late father’s country station, Brindley Park, near Merriwa in the Hunter Valley and continued the successful production of fine wool there. In 1864 James jun. married his first cousin, Caroline Sophia Hallen, the daughter of Ambrose and Sarah Hallen. Eventually James and Caroline returned to Sydney and retired to his parent’s family home of Oatlands. In 1908 Oatlands House had a taste of its future use when James and Caroline’s youngest daughter, Beatrix, married John Seymour Robertson. The couple celebrated their wedding breakfast with about 100 guests in a marquee on the lawns of Oatlands House. The tables were decorated with flowers and the Bettington family maids, all dressed in blue, assisted by waiters from the A.B.C. Café, served the repast. The wedding cake was referred to as “a veritable triumph of artistic confectionery”. It comprised five tiers supported by Corinthian columns and decorated with love-birds, turtle doves, bells, lucky horseshoes, and the national emblems, namely, a kangaroo and emu! The chauffeurs who conveyed the guests to the reception were simultaneously and thoughtfully served their own banquet! Beatrix’s father, James, the well-regarded pastoralist, passed away at Oatlands House in 1915. He was buried in the private cemetery on the Oatlands estate next to his youngest son, Charles Septimus, who had died there of meningitis in 1895 at the age of 12. In 1921 Oatlands House was featured in “The Home” magazine with wonderful contemporary photographs of how it appeared then. It noted that the estate was so named because of the quantity oats harvested from its fields and sent to Sydney. James’ widow, Caroline Bettington, continued living at Oatlands House and also died there in 1923 at the age of 80. She joined her husband and son in the private cemetery. Unfortunately, the headstones of the family graves have been removed. Over the years, the grounds of Oatlands House were sold off, much of it to the nearby Oatlands Golf Club, which opened in 1931. The club was closed down during the Second World War and the Australian Army commandeered the course from 1942 to house the 1000-strong Australian Army Corps of Signals 2. The Corp’s officers took up residence in Oatlands House and the clubhouse became the mess. In 1962, the old sandstone stables of Oatlands House were purchased by the golf club and converted into its Professional Shop. At least the presence of the golf course has ensured that Oatlands House will always be surrounded by sweeping green lawns rather than being built out by encroaching residential development as is usually the case with old mansions. By 1948 Oatlands House was being advertised as a guest house run by Mrs M.J. Seymour “in the healthy climate of the Hills District”, “newly and tastefully furnished” and with “excellent cuisine”. Another proprietor was Doris Roden who in November 1948 advertised the house as exclusive accommodation and an “ideal country holiday resort” with “farm products of milk, cream and poultry”. It wasn’t long before the place became a hive of social activity and became so popular that by 1952 it was advertised as being used as a “beautiful” and “dignified” venue for wedding receptions, lunches, dinner parties and other functions. It boasted a tennis court and swimming pool and was being operated by Mrs Joyce Overall, formerly of the Macquarie Hydro at Camden. The original 1830s wing of the house was extended to cater for large functions. As the popularity of wedding receptions in the family home or a rented hall diminished and the change to using gracious old mansions for “fairy-tale” weddings increased, further extensions had to be made to Oatlands House. By the early 1970s, its owner was Elizabeth Donoghue and during this time catering for weddings and functions was still prepared in the original sandstone kitchen block, detached from the main building across the courtyard. However, a fire in the kitchen guttered the building. The sandstone blocks were cleaned and the kitchen rebuilt with large windows and reopened as a restaurant. A new kitchen was built in part of the extensions. The former two-storey servant’s quarters, forming part of the courtyard, was then used as an office on the ground floor and a bridal change-room on the first floor. In 1991 Oatlands House was purchased and operated by Oscar Nemme, then in 2012 by Navarra Venues, established in 1973 by a Sicilian migrant, Filippo Navarra who had arrived in Australia in 1965. This organisation now owns several venues, including Curzon Hall at Marsfield. Official recognition of the historic name of Oatlands for the area was made with the gazetting of Oatlands as a suburb in 1991.
