1911 or 1912. The Forster Family
Back: Rose and William Middle: Frank, Eli and Alice Front: Violet and Norman Forster Mulgrave, NSW, Australia Frank was Henry and Maria's third child, and only surviving son. He was baptised at Studley on 19th April 1863. He grew up at Lower Skilts and farmed there with his father Henry until around 1881. He is still with the family at Ullenhall at the time of the 1881 census, which was taken on the 3rd April. However, as they had vacated Skilts, it is to be assumed that the row, which caused Frank to leave, had occurred. However Frank did not arrive in Australia until 1889 so it would appear that, contrary to family legend, his departure did not happen the very day of the argument! (According to his death certificate of 1942, he had been in NSW for 50 years, making his year of arrival 1892, when it was actually 1889.) The story, as retold many times, went something as follows. "It had been a hot dry summer sometime at the turn of the 1880's, farming had been difficult, the grass had dried up and fodder for the dairy herd was short. One Sunday morning the young Frank Forster returned from church to Lower Skilts to find that his father Henry had let the cows into a field of clover that Frank was growing to be sold as fodder for the draught horses in Birmingham. Frank had been relying on the income from that crop. It was the last straw. He announced that he was finishing with the farm. He packed his bags, walked to Liverpool and signed on to work his passage on a ship bound for New South Wales." The courage required to take such a step can only be imagined. Frank took nothing with him. He worked his passage and when he arrived in Australia had to take what employment he could, which was firstly in helping lay the railway track for this new and developing colony. His farming career in Australia started when he took a job as a Farm Hand at Macleney River, Northern New South Wales. From there he moved to Riverstone, where he grew vegetables. It was whilst he was at Riverstone that Frank married Alice Haynes, daughter of William and Ann Haynes of Kington Herefordshire. The marriage took place on October 13th 1891, at the home of Alice's brother Jesse, in Chandos Street, North Shore, Sydney. Frank and Alice had their first three children, William Raymond 1894, Rose 1895 and Eli 1897 in Riverstone. ( 1896 Burlington Road, Homebush ) Following Riverstone he leased a farm at Mulgrave, where they had the last two of their five children, Norman 1899 and Violet 1902. ( The story here continues in an account by his daughter Violet 1/10/1902 - 8/10/1994 ) "I was born at Mulgrave 1902 on a farm west of Sydney. We had a few cows, sent the milk to the Fresh Food and Ice Company. We grew all our own feed and vegetables. My father had a vegetable run for a time. He grew a lot of corn, let it dry on the stalks then pull it and shell it off the cobs and put it in big bags and sold it. ( 1914 Mulgrave 350 A.(cres) 5 H.(orses) 60 C.(attle) ) ( With the farm he did not have much luck. ) We were there about three years ( ?? at least 1899 - 1914) Then we went to Freeman's Reach on another farm. More cows, sent milk to Fresh Food and Ice Company. Grew all our own feed and vegetables. We had three apricot trees, one quince, one apple, one loquat, three persimmon trees; we were there about three years. ( ? 1915 - 1917) ( 1915 Freeman's Reach 330 A.(cres) 9 H.(orses) 62 C.(attle)) ( His fortunes changed completely when he moved to Freeman's Reach, another farm that he leased. He flourished and through his own hard work managed to set up a farm and expand his dairy business.) We then moved to North Bondi a suburban dairy of Sydney, (Leased Dairy) We had two milk runs, one in Rose Bay, which is a section of Sydney Harbour Eastern suburbs area, the other in Bondi, delivered twice daily. We were there in the First World War 1914-1918. ( ? 1918 - 1920) At that time we were the only folk who had a telephone, people asked my father if he would mind taking a message for them. From Bondi we moved to Bexley to another suburban dairy which my father bought. ( 1921 - 1928 Stoney Creek Road, Bexley ) We had two milk runs and delivered in Bexley. Where the dairy was is the Bexley Golf Course now. My father bought three blocks of land in Hurstville where he built our home in the middle block one he grew vegetables and flowers and fruit, the other block we used to play tennis sometimes. The house was called "Skilts" it still stands today opposite the golf course, one side of the road Bexley the other Hurstville. Frank retired at Bexley. ( Here Violet's daughter, Elaine continues the story.) "Grandfather's Dairies "Alma" dairy at Bondi, Murriverie Road 1914-1918, rented from Mr Land. "Bonnie Doon" dairy, now Bexley Golf Course. 1920's - 1930's My father and Uncle Willie (William Raymond Forster) owned "Roundhill" dairy, corner Canonbury and Preddys Road, Bexley. Uncle Eli had a dairy at Killara, north shore suburb after moving to Toowoomba. Uncle Norman had a dairy at Lindfield, Provincial Road, Lindfield, also a North Shore suburb. Uncle Joe and Auntie Rose had a dairy at Lane Cove Road, Ryde. I loved to go to Auntie Rose and Uncle Joe's in the holidays; Uncle Joe always gave you a lovely time. He loved children. All these areas are all housing now you would never know a dairy had been there. Lots of changes." Frank's rift with his father Henry was not long lasting, as he returned to England several times. His Grandson Peter Forster had a silver pocket watch, that has on it's face, in place of the numbers for the hours, the name HENRY FORSTER, conveniently twelve letters. Frank died on the 18th July 1942 in the Hurstville district and is buried at Woronora Cemetery near Sydney. There is a pink granite headstone, which reads. "In Loving Memory Of My Dear Wife and Our Mother Alice Forster Who Departed This Life 12th Novr 1932 Aged 68 Years Gone But Not Forgotten Also Her Dear Husband Our Father Francis Forster Who Departed This Life 18th July 1942 Aged 79 Years" Frank and Alice had nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and at least six great-great grandchildren. There are currently (Jan 2006), at least fourteen members of the Forster family in Australia who still bear the family name. Entries in Sands Directories Sydney and New South Wales 1896 F.
