HS - A RAINBOW OF COLOURS
So far in trying to find out the various colour variations for the MG HS around the world, I have discovered no fewer than 28 different listed colours, from rarities like MAYA BROWN and PADDINGTON BROWN which were never officially put into production by MG to the later MEDAL SILVER Metallic, BLACK KNIGHT, CLIPPER BLUE and SCARLET RED which appeared on specific market vehicles.
I've seen a beautiful Gloss metallic Midnight green wrapped version in Pakistan, as well as some pretty 'out there' other wraps!
LET'S BEGIN WITH THE RAREST MG HS COLOUR EVER PRODUCED
The MG HS IMODIUM in brown...... OK, that's just my nickname for this elusive colour that has certainly divided opinion amongst us. An oddity for sure and so I turned to my friends on the MG GS/HS - FANS AND OWNERS, MG HS and HS PHEV UK owners and MG HS Australian owners club face book groups who came up trumps: Many thanks to SUE CROPPER, JACK COLLIER, ANDREW MALLARD, ROBERT GRAHAM and a special mention for ERIC STONE who nailed it with some brilliant video footage and links that revealed the truth behind the story.
AND SO IT WAS.....BROWN
The Brown metallic MG HS was in fact a pre production colour, very likely a paint scheme lifted from the sister MG GS model that was in production in 2018.In the UK there is also an official PADDINGTON BROWN (DSK 10743412) touch up paint kit listed for the MG HS & MAYA BROWN (DSK 10743412) touch up paint kit listed for the MG HS PHEV, neither colour having ever been officially released on the HS, and 'Mocha brown' was referred to by one MG dealer, and thus it's fair at present to consider at least one of these browns as being the ones on the pre production cars.
A brown metallic MG HS was used as a press review and test car in New Zealand in May 2018 when reviewer David Linklater mistakenly said that the HS was a remodelling and rebadged second generation of the current GS model, that had first made it's debut at the Shanghai Motor show in April 2015. It was a 2.0T AWD version of the HS in brown, that was never officially listed in the brochures as a colour in New Zealand or indeed in any other country of the world.
This in itself is curious as the MG HS wasn't revealed until early 2018 for a September 2018 Chinese market release.
It appeared in an official MG advertisement that was used in LNW Lankanewsweb in Sri Lanka on 17th September 2019, and other Sri Lankan websites. I also found images of that brown MG HS for sale on a website for a car dealership at Weg naar Welgelegen 38, Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean. It also turned up in an advertisement for second hand cars in a Canadian dealership in Ottawa! Now that is bizarre as the MG has never been sold in Canada.
In September 2019 Holden Norfolk Group MG in Norwich had a brown MG HS demonstrator that they featured in a video on November 7th 2019.Holden confirmed in September 2019 on their face book page regarding the release of the brown demonstrator that this was indeed a Pre-production colour that MG had considered for UK release but by September 2019 had already decided not to bring this colour to the UK. In the UK in 2021 a brown HS was advertised for sale in an edition of Autotrader at dealership ERIC STEAD in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in 1.5T Exclusive form and by now we had established that there are in existence LHD and RHD versions of Excite and Exclusive models as well as UK spec 1.5T engines and 2.0T AWD versions as far back as May 2018 for New Zealand and Australia. It's a colour that wasn't popular and was thus shelved by MG , but there is no denying Brown is the rarest colour of any official MG HS made to date!
