Salt wind and steep sandstone, Manly to Palm Beach

Landscaping Northern Beaches

Coastal gardens that stand up to the peninsula wind.

The Northern Beaches hands you salt-laden wind straight off the ocean and blocks that fall away down the sandstone. All Green builds gardens and hard landscaping that hold their ground on both. Licensed, rated 4.9, out seven days across the peninsula.

A coastline that never stops moving

Living with wind, salt and rock

The peninsula is built on sandstone and washed by the sea. Onshore wind carries salt well inland, burning soft foliage and rusting anything that is not marine grade, while the geology means thin soil sits over rock shelves and many blocks tumble down a steep incline. Sea-facing gardens cop the full force; sheltered gully blocks behind them are a different, softer proposition entirely.

High rainfall runs hard down those slopes, so drainage and retaining matter as much as planting. We read the exposure first, then build accordingly: wind-firm coastal species and marine fixings out front, terraces cut into the sandstone to reclaim flat ground, softer planting in the protected pockets. The Northern Beaches Council has strong tree controls worth checking before any removal, and blocks backing reserve should follow NSW Rural Fire Service guidance.

What we bring to a peninsula block

Every service, built for exposure and slope

Landscape Design Northern Beaches

We design around exposure: sheltered pockets for softer planting, wind-firm coastal species on the ocean side, and terraces that turn a steep sandstone block into flat, usable living space. You get the layout, levels and plant list before we build.

Mulching Northern Beaches

Wind and slope strip mulch fast up here. We use heavier grades, and coir matting where it is needed on an incline, so the mulch stays put and keeps thin coastal soil from drying out in the sea breeze.

Paving Northern Beaches

Salt air and steep access make paving tricky. We lay durable, non-slip surfaces on properly retained bases so patios and paths stay level on the escarpment and shrug off the coastal weather.

See paving →

Retaining Walls Northern Beaches

The peninsula is all slopes. We engineer terraced walls into the sandstone with drainage behind them so wet-season runoff cannot build pressure or wash the ground out from under them.

See retaining walls →

Land Clearing Northern Beaches

We clear steep, overgrown and bush-backed blocks safely, taking out scrub and fuel while protecting the trees and rock features worth keeping. Access gear and careful handling on the incline included.

Turf Laying Northern Beaches

Lawns here fight wind, salt and slope at once. We build soil up over the rock, grade for drainage and lay hard-wearing turf chosen to cope with full coastal exposure rather than burn off in a blow.

Tree Services Northern Beaches

Pruning and removals among tall coastal gums and angophoras, working to the council’s strong tree controls and clearing fire fuel on bush boundaries. We take down hazards safely on tight, sloping sites.

Weeding Northern Beaches

Reserve-edge gardens get hit by bitou bush and lantana blowing off the coast. We clear the invasives at the root so they do not keep creeping back off the neighbouring bushland.

Garden Maintenance Northern Beaches

Regular care tuned to salt and slope: wash-downs after a big blow, pruning wind-battered growth, and keeping terraced gardens neat year round. One-off resets or an ongoing round, seven days.

The peninsula’s hard truths

Four things every coastal block has to beat

Relentless salt-laden wind

Onshore wind drives salt deep inland here, scorching leaves and corroding fixings. We plant tough coastal species that expect it and specify marine-grade fittings so the hard landscaping lasts.

Blocks that drop off the sandstone

Escarpment sections are steep and rocky, with little flat ground to start from. We cut and retain terraces into the rock so you get usable garden out of a slope.

Thin soil over rock shelves

There is often barely any topsoil before you hit sandstone. We build raised beds and import quality soil so plants have the depth to root and hold.

Reviews from our Clients

How we tame a peninsula block

From exposed slope to a garden you can use

01

Read exposure and slope

We check how much wind and salt the block cops and how steep the fall is before quoting.

02

Design for wind and rock

The plan sets terraces, drainage and a planting palette matched to sea-facing or sheltered aspects.

03

Terrace and build up soil

We cut and retain the levels, run drainage and import soil so there is real depth to plant into.

04

Plant and keep it thriving

Coastal-hardy planting and finishes go in, then a care plan to hold it together through the salt and storms.

Questions we hear across the peninsula

Steep, salt-exposed blocks cost more to build than flat ones, because terracing, retaining and access all add up. A sheltered courtyard is far simpler. We assess the slope and exposure on site, then give you a free written quote for the actual work involved.

Taller walls, work on steep sites and anything structural often need approval and sometimes an engineer’s design. We check the current Northern Beaches Council rules and tell you what your wall requires before we start.

Coastal-hardy species do the heavy lifting: banksia, coastal rosemary, westringia, pigface and native grasses that expect wind and salt. We shelter softer plants in the protected pockets rather than exposing them to the front line.

Yes. Terracing and retaining steep sandstone is core to what we do on the peninsula. We cut levels, retain them properly and turn a slope you cannot stand on into flat, planted, usable garden.

Yes, NSW Licence No. 353827C, more than ten years of landscaping and a 4.9 rating from 52 reviews. Ask us for the licence details whenever you like.

We work the length of the Northern Beaches, from the southern end up to the top of the peninsula. We are open seven days for quotes, project work and ongoing garden care.
