A coastline that never stops moving
The peninsula is built on sandstone and washed by the sea. Onshore wind carries salt well inland, burning soft foliage and rusting anything that is not marine grade, while the geology means thin soil sits over rock shelves and many blocks tumble down a steep incline. Sea-facing gardens cop the full force; sheltered gully blocks behind them are a different, softer proposition entirely.
High rainfall runs hard down those slopes, so drainage and retaining matter as much as planting. We read the exposure first, then build accordingly: wind-firm coastal species and marine fixings out front, terraces cut into the sandstone to reclaim flat ground, softer planting in the protected pockets. The Northern Beaches Council has strong tree controls worth checking before any removal, and blocks backing reserve should follow NSW Rural Fire Service guidance.
What we bring to a peninsula block
We design around exposure: sheltered pockets for softer planting, wind-firm coastal species on the ocean side, and terraces that turn a steep sandstone block into flat, usable living space. You get the layout, levels and plant list before we build.
Wind and slope strip mulch fast up here. We use heavier grades, and coir matting where it is needed on an incline, so the mulch stays put and keeps thin coastal soil from drying out in the sea breeze.
Salt air and steep access make paving tricky. We lay durable, non-slip surfaces on properly retained bases so patios and paths stay level on the escarpment and shrug off the coastal weather.
The peninsula is all slopes. We engineer terraced walls into the sandstone with drainage behind them so wet-season runoff cannot build pressure or wash the ground out from under them.
We clear steep, overgrown and bush-backed blocks safely, taking out scrub and fuel while protecting the trees and rock features worth keeping. Access gear and careful handling on the incline included.
