The Blue Mountains sit high above the plain, and the climate is genuinely different: hard frosts, cold winters, the odd fall of snow at the top, mist and higher rainfall than the coast. The ground is thin soil over sandstone, blocks are steep along the escarpment, and homes sit in or against World Heritage bushland that carries serious fire risk. It is also, thanks to the cool climate, the one part of greater Sydney where deciduous trees and true cottage-garden plants really flourish.
So a mountains garden is planned for cold and fire first, then for the wonderful cool-climate planting the altitude allows. Terracing the escarpment and managing the bush boundary come with the territory. For tree work and vegetation, check current controls with Blue Mountains City Council, and blocks against bushland must follow NSW Rural Fire Service guidance on the defendable space.
