“Shubra Hall”, Meta Street, Croydon, NSW, formerly home of Anthony Hordern III and now part of the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sydney
“Shubra Hall”, located in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Croydon, was built for the retailing baron, Anthony Hordern III, in 1869. It is a grand Victorian Italianate mansion with an imposing tower. In 1889 it was purchased by the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales for occupation by the Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Sydney, the first girls’ school established by the church in this State. Anthony Hordern III (1842-1886) was born in Melbourne, the eldest child of Anthony Hordern II and his wife Harriett (nee Marsden, the daughter of the Rev. Samuel Marsden). In about 1844 the Hordern family moved to Sydney and opened a drapery shop on Brickfield Hill. Anthony junior was sent to finish his education in England at Rugy then at the age of 19 went on a grand tour with his uncle, visiting Ceylon, Egypt, France and England. On his return he entered his father’s business, then a three-storey drapery shop in Sydney’s Haymarket, for which he had been groomed all his life. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Mary Bull, usually known as Mary, and the couple moved into 756 George Street, Sydney, vacated by his parents prior to their moving to Retford Hall, Darling Point. From about this time Anthony jun. began calling himself Tertius (Latin for third), to save confusion with his father. Tertius became a partner in his father’s business in 1865 and after his younger brother, Samuel Hordern (1849-1909), joined the firm four years later it became Anthony Hordern and Sons. At this time the business was still a modest one consisting of a shop with a 35 foot (10.7 m) frontage in George Street, and a staff of eleven selling haberdashery and manchester. In 1868 Tertius decided to move away from the unsanitary conditions of the city as the sewage system was incapable of dealing with Sydney’s growing demand and the water supply had become “so contaminated that the idea of drinking it was nauseating”. Much of the city smelt like a drain and 12 percent of all children under two years of age died of typhoid. Indeed, Tertius’ wife Mary, had borne and lost three infants, two dying at birth and the third at fifteen months. Consequently, Anthony purchased a farm of 30 acres (12. 1 ha) at Ashfield, now Croydon, in a peaceful rural area lying between the road and railway. On their new property a large home was designed for the Horderns by Albert Bond, a young architect just commencing his practice, who subsequently went on to design most of the Anthony Hordern and Sons’ buildings over the next forty years. While their home was being built, the Horderns lived in its stables in order to closely supervise the work. They called their house, “Shubra Hall”, the derivation of which is uncertain but may have been after Shubra, a district in Cairo that Tertius had visited during his travels. Tertius not only gave the name to his home but used it as the middle name of his youngest son, Anthony Shubra Hordern born in 1879, whose descendants carried on the name. Shubra Hall is typical of the style of large domestic residences chosen by successful Sydney businessmen at the time with high ceilinged rooms designed for living and entertaining, asymmetrical façades and towers which gave the buildings a “landmark” quality. Shubra Hall’s tower is striking with its truncated pyramidal roof topped with iron cresting which for many decades dominated the landscape around Croydon. Other features include bracketed eaves, a faceted two-storey bay window capped by a pyramidal roof, stucco wall finish, cast-iron lace verandah and verandah posts, elaborate tessellated verandah tiles and arched window openings. On the ground floor were two drawing rooms, a dining room and breakfast room and on the first floor three large bedrooms with anterooms. A two-storey service wing was constructed at the rear with a kitchen, laundry and service rooms on the ground floor and servants’ bedrooms upstairs. The house was listed variously in Sands Sydney Directories as “Shubra Hall”, “Shubra Park” and even “Hordernville”! At about the same time as Shubra Hall was under construction, Tertius began speculative building, buying land in the neighbouring suburbs of Burwood and Ashfield and erecting small cottages which he immediately sold. After the construction of nearby Croydon railway station, opened in 1875, for which Tertius was partly responsible, he began to subdivide and sell off his own land around the Hall. The area was easily accessible by public transport and the grounds had potential as a fashionable suburb within easy reach of the city. After the death of Tertias’ father, Anthony Hordern II, in 1876 the Hordern sons, Tertius and Samuel, began expanding the family business. The limitations of the drapery shop gave way to the concept of universal provision which meant bringing together a variety of goods traditionally sold through smaller specialised outlets. In order to obtain a comprehensive range of products, they combed the world’s markets including Great Britain and Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and China. They also began to manufacture some of their own products and their factories, stables and warehouses began to appear in suburbs around Sydney. In 1881 they opened their Palace Emporium in the Haymarket area of Sydney with a staff of 500. For some time Tertius had also been interested in the development of Western Australia. In 1883 he gained support from the Legislative Assembly of that State for a land grant scheme attracting 50,000 immigrants and building a private railway from Albany to Beverley by way of funds raised by a subscription in England. In February 1883 he left for England on the R.M.S. Ballarat to make final arrangements for the scheme, the Western Australian Land Co. Intending to remain there for a while and eventually settling in Western Australia, he put Shubra Hall up for sale. The Horderns lived in England for a couple of years finalising the business arrangements. In 1886 Tertius set off on his own for Perth to attend the turning of the first sod for the scheme’s railway but tragically died at sea on the R.M.S. Carthage from brain fever (after suffering from sunstroke) aged 44. He left his widow, Mary, and four children. In 1884 Shubra Hall had been purchased as the family home of John Francis Coghlan (1835-1896), manager of the Australian Diamond Rock Drill and Boring Co. Ltd which he had formed in 1878 to manufacture diamond rock drills. He was born in Ireland and by 1874 was in Sydney where he married Josephine Murphy at St Mary’s Cathedral. During their time at Shubra Hall, the garden was further planted with exotic trees and shrubs and another service wing added. However, the Coghlans’ time was short-lived at Shubra Hall as in 1889 John was declared insolvent, a victim of the looming 1890s depression, and was forced to sell their home. They moved to Glebe where he died in 1896 aged 61. Only three years later, on 26 October 1889, Shubra Hall was purchased by the Presbyterian Church in New South Wales as the new home for the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sydney. The College had opened in January, 1888, with thirty-nine students in a leased former gentleman's residence, “Fernlea”, in Ashfield. Shubra Hall became the family residence of the school's first headmaster, Dr John Marden (1855-1924), and his wife, Jane (nee Armstrong) a former teacher, and their family with a study downstairs and front and back sitting rooms for entertaining. Plans for an additional building for the school were completed in February 1890 by Shubra Hall's original architect, Albert Bond. Many people mistake this building for Shubra Hall, especially with its Victorian Italianate details and tower. However, most of the ideas for the new building were Marden's, based on what he had seen as a teacher at the Methodist Ladies College, Melbourne. The new school building was equipped with a hall, dining room, school room, six classrooms, five music rooms, numerous dormitories, six bathrooms, a gymnasium and studio. On 22 February 1891 the school transferred to its new home and was officially opened on 10 March of that year by the newly-appointed Governor, the Earl of Jersey and his wife the Countess of Jersey. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Australia in New South Wales was in session and adjourned for the afternoon to allow members to travel by special train to Croydon with the Governor. During the ceremony, the Governor turned to the Countess and asked her to speak. In the 1890s it was most unusual for a woman to undertake public speaking and consequently her speech was widely reported in the press throughout Australia. As a result, the Countess' name has been associated ever since with the reunion of ex-students in March, called Jersey Day. Dr Marden was keenly interested in horticulture and planned magnificent gardens and playing fields at Croydon with shrubs and trees from Australia and overseas. His aim was to help and instruct the girls in the practical aspects of botany and replace the grapevines, which had been in front of Shubra Hall, with palms and new fruit trees. The school also employed a head gardener, Albert Evans, who tended the school’s gardens for 43 years. Its beautiful grounds were a popular venue for garden parties, plays and pageants. By 1913 space at the site was at a premium and Dr Marden reported to the Council that many applications for places had to be refused. Under his guidance, the Presbyterian Church bought 50 acres (20.2 ha) of land at Pymble, on Sydney's Upper North Shore, in 1916 and established a 'sister' school. Dr and Mrs Marden moved to Pymble in 1918 and he administered both schools until his retirement the following year after 32 years at P.L.C. Back at Croydon, the school’s new Principal was Dr E. Neil McQueen, who had been its former Vice-Principal. As he was already settled in his own accommodation (“Red House”) Shubra Hall was used as reception rooms, study and offices while upstairs accommodated the Kindergarten class under Miss Froggatt. It was also the home of Mrs Wallace, Jane Marden’s sister, leader of the school’s music program and for many years editor of its magazine. During the Second World War Shubra Hall was requisitioned for military purposes and served as the administration block of the Royal Australian Air Force’s No.1 Radar and Development Unit from 1942 until 1945. The Principal’s study became the office of the commanding officer and the Kindergarten became the Sergeants’ recreation room. Meriden Church of England Girls’ Grammar School at Strathfield housed the boarders while “Lingwood” at 16 Margaret Street, Strathfield, was purchased as the day school. However, Meriden was not available for long and two other Strathfield residences, “Lauiston and “Welbeck”, were leased. In early 1946 most of the students returned to Croydon though the lower primary classes continued on at Lingwood. After their occupation the military authorities paid for extensive repairs and renovations to the school. One of the legacies left by the Air Force included portable huts in the grounds which provided extra classroom accommodation for Science, Home Science and Art until the mid. 1950s. Between 1946 and 1985, the top floor of Shubra Hall provided accommodation for a succession of Principals, Eunice Macindoe, Jean Tassie, Freda L. Whitlam (Gough Whitlam’s sister), Norma Brown and Patricia Dyson, while the ground floor housed the Principal’s office. When Dr William T. McKeith arrived in 1986 with his wife and young family, Shubra Hall was no longer suitable and accommodation was found for them nearby at “Harmsworth”, 114 Edwin Street, Croydon. Today (2022) Shubra Hall, its stables and remnant garden continue to be an important part of the history of the school.
