The Town Hall Theatre in the southwestern Sydney suburb of Campbelltown occupies two heritage buildings, a temperance hall built in 1862, and reused as a town hall in 1884, and a fire station erected in 1891. The former temperance hall is the large two-storey building on the right, erected for the Campbelltown Band of Hope, a temperance friendly society formed by the Campbelltown Congregational Church. The temperance movement was an organisation dedicated to promoting moderation in the use of intoxicating liquor, or, more often, total abstinence. The earliest temperance organisations were founded America in Saratoga, New York, in 1808 and in Massachusetts in 1813. The movement spread rapidly under the influence of the churches and by 1833 there were about 6,000 local societies in the USA. The earliest European organisations were formed in Ireland, making effective progress there in 1829 with the formation of the Ulster Temperance Society. The first Australian temperance group was the NSW Temperance Society formed in 1832 by the Rev. W.P. Crick. The Governor, Sir George Gipps, became president of the Society after his arrival in Sydney in 1838. Over the years many other societies were formed, including the Band of Hope as well as the Sons and Daughters of Temperance and the Local Option League. The Campbelltown temperance hall was built to provide an alternative public meeting venue to hotels. The hall features a raised stage with dressing rooms each side, a kitchen underneath, could seat 400 people and was lit by kerosene lamps. It was constructed by a local contractor, James Bocking, who was also responsible for the Campbelltown Congregational Church which later reused as the Campbelltown Coach Restaurant followed by the Golden Wheel Chinese Restaurant. Bocking owned a flour mill, the mill house of which was later Fishers Ghost Restaurant. By 1884 the Campbelltown temperance hall was owned by the Crystal Spring No.32 Division of the Sons of Temperance Society. In April of that year the hall was acquired by Campbelltown Council for use as a town. (Two years previously Campbelltown had been proclaimed a municipal district). The reason for its purchase for 800 pounds and reuse is probably related to the fact that three of the five trustees for the owners, the Sons of Temperance, were municipal councillors, namely James Bocking, James Wilson and Alexander Munro, while a fourth trustee, John Kidd, was the local Member of Parliament. The smaller building on the left was constructed as a fire station, designed by local Campbelltown architect, Alfred Rose Payten (1867-1960) and built by Geroge Lusted. In typical style, the recently elected mayor at the time, David Hugh Barker (1837-1899), has his name perpetuated on the station’s façade. It was equipped with a reel and 1,000 feet of hose. Not long after its completion, the fire station was taken over by the council for office space. The following year, in 1892, a matching façade and front offices, also designed by Payten, were added to the front of the town hall to provide extra office space for the council. This consisted of stuccoed walls with Victorian classical detailing, a pediment over the front door, decorative accents on the skyline, and Tuscan and Corinthian pillars. The New South Wales Board of Fire Commissioners of New South Wales threatened court action to retrieve the fire station, but in 1909 accepted 75 pounds from council for the premises. Another user of the town hall was the Campbelltown Masonic Lodge Federation, formed under the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales, which met in the council chamber. The Free Public Library reading room, operated by the council, was said to have been set up under the stage while in the early 1900s the auditorium was hired out in the evenings to screen silent films. An expanding workload for Campbelltown Municipal Council necessitated them taking over the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall and School of Arts in Queen Street in 1953. The town hall also became a venue for local dances, balls and concerts until 1964 when new council accommodation was built on the corner of Queen and Broughton Streets, including a civic hall, women’s rest centre and library. The old temperance hall gained a cantilevered awning out the front and by the 1970s had become the Campbelltown RSL Youth Centre. Then, in 1980, the building was repurposed again to become the home of the Campbelltown Theatre Group, which had been formed in 1956. The group’s first production was the “The Pirates of Penzance” in 1957. Campbelltown Theatre Group is one of hundreds of community theatre groups across Australia operated by members of the public on a not-for-profit basis. Members give freely of their time and resources, there are no permanent paid staff and all income derived is returned to the group for use in the next production or for maintenance. The Town Hall Theatre continues to operate today and the group’s first production for 2024 is scheduled to be “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. “Emily Cottage”, 1 Old Menangle Road, Campbelltown, NSW
The picturesque little sandstone cottage with a shingle roof located on the corner of Old Menangle and Camden Roads in the southwestern Sydney suburb of Campbelltown was believed to have been erected between 1823 and 1827. It is claimed that the building was used as a toll house, though this is unlikely as most toll houses were curved with windows providing a good view of approaching vehicles on the road. It is more likely the building was a toll keeper’s house adjacent to the actual toll bar which was a gate across the road. The cottage being located at the intersection of several roads would have been a logical place for a toll gate however there is no documentary evidence supporting such a use. The large and impressive oil lamp extending from the side wall of the cottage on a bracket, decorated with wrought iron work, was typical of the type used to light village inns. This points to another possible use of the building. The cottage is believed to have been named after Emily Ada Pearl Denmead (1871–1944) (later Wearne), born in Campbelltown, the daughter of former convict, James Denmead (1816-1894) and Elizabeth Jane Denmead (nee Daley) (1829-1914) who were living in the cottage. James Denmead was a butcher in Campbelltown for about 30 years and possibly had his shop adjoining the cottage. Emily’s older sister, 21-year-old Mary Ellen Denmead (known as Polly), was famously struck by lightning during a fierce storm in 1883. Sydney’s “Evening News” newspaper of 16 February 1883 noted that Miss Denmead was standing at her bedroom window on the previous Sunday at midday when it was said a flash of lighting struck the iron frame of her bed, burning the curtains and killing her “on the spot”. There is yet another story that Emily Cottage was named by a retired sea captain who lived in the cottage in 1865 and called it after his brig, the “Emily”. The cottage has been reused for many years as a home, an arts and crafts shop, picture framing business and even tea rooms. Emily Cottage’s enigmatic history doesn’t diminish its visual appeal. It has been a landmark in Campbelltown for many decades and remains one of the area’s most loved buildings. The house was sold in 2004, 2006 and 2013. In July 2018 it fetched $1,050,000 and only four months later, on 21 November 2018, was sold to the Campbelltown Catholic Club for $1. Over the years the club had also purchased other historic buildings in Campbelltown including “Quondong Cottage” formerly St Patrick’s Catholic School and now the home of the Campbelltown Visitor Information Centre and the old Fisher’s Ghost Restaurant, formerly the miller’s residence attached to Laurence Kendall’s flour mill. “Quondong Cottage” formerly St Patrick’s Catholic School, 15 Old Menangle Road, Campbelltown, NSW
It is claimed that “Quondong Cottage” in the south western Sydney suburb of Campbelltown was the first Catholic school in Australia to be built from private subscriptions. Bishop John Bede Polding laid its foundation stone on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March 1840, and named the school St Patrick’s. It was designed by the Parish Priest, Father John Therry, in a Colonial Gothic style with fine cedar framed pointed gothic windows. Stylistic features indicate that the Colonial Architect, Mortimer Lewis, may have assisted as well. At this time the building comprised a simple rectangular school room with a fireplace, a small additional classroom, verandah and a basic teacher’s residence attached comprising a parlour and bedroom. The school was constructed of early types of building materials including pit sawn timbers, shell-lime plaster and hardwood roof shingles. St Patrick’s first intake comprised 54 children with parents contributing a halfpenny a day to the school fees. The curriculum included Spelling, Reading, Writing, Dictation, Grammar, Arithmetic, Geography, Singing and Catechism. It is thought the bushranger, Mad Dog Morgan, then known as John Owen, was one of the school’s early pupils. For over 40 years lay teachers taught the local children with tuition often provided by live-in married couples with the wives teaching sewing to girls. By 1864 there were 102 children enrolled between the ages of 7 and 12. An inventory of the school’s furniture and teaching equipment taken in 1880 provides a fascinating snapshot of late nineteenth century education in a small country school house. St Patrick’s had 4 blackboards, 3 easels, 2 work desks, 1 book case, 10 desks and 9 forms. For teaching handwriting there were 90 slates, 27 inkwells, 4 bottles of ink, 7 dozen pen holders, 3 boxes of pens, 7 boxes of pencils, and 2 boxes of chalk. Maps played an important role in the classroom and St Patrick’s had 2 world maps as well as maps of Asia, Africa, Europe, British Isle, North America, South America, Australia, New South Wales, New Zealand, the British Isles, Palestine and Syria. Other teaching resources included a map of marine currents; geometrical, zoological and ethnological diagrams; models of a steam engine and blast furnace; and sets of reading lessons and drawing books. Record keeping was maintained in two lesson registers, a fee receipt book, visitors’ book and punishment book. From 1889 tuition at the school was taken over by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. During their stay the school held picnics and outings for the students and an annual concert in the Campbelltown Town Hall (now reused as a theatre). After the completion of a new brick parish school in 1914, alongside the St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lindsay St, Campbelltown, the old St Patrick’s school building was surplus to requirements and sold. It was purchased by Catherine Theresa Keihone, a widow, and converted into a private residence called “Quondong” after the native peach tree. In 1959 the house was acquired by Cyril Segal who subdivided it into two flats and leased them until 1991 after which it was purchased by the Campbelltown Catholic Club. By this time the historic structure had fallen into disrepair and restoration of the building began in 1996. Over the years “Quondong” had sustained various additions at the rear, an enclosed side verandah and an iron roof. The iron roof was removed and replaced with Bloodwood timber shingles. Inside, the old hardwood floors were replaced with timber rescued from an old demolished wool store. This was milled with the same style of tongue and groove profile to match the original. A surprising discovery was another cedar framed Gothic window which had been boarded up, and various artefacts were found under the original floorboards. In 1997 Campbelltown Catholic Club Ltd handed over “Quondong Cottage” for use as Campbelltown’s Visitor Information Centre. The main school room is devoted to tourist brochures, booklets and souvenirs while three smaller additional rooms display a classroom of desks and other local history items.
